OK that works, I set the launch command to:
Code: | LD_PRELOAD=./left4dead2/bin/matchmaking.so %command% |
It gets as far as the main menu at least, still tweaking options... |

Unbelievable!
I just installed Steam (using the wiki) and all my (rather old) games are ported.
...then I mad a fun trip to the store, selected "Linux", and that crazy thing lists 239 games. Available for linux. Wow. _________________ Important German:- "Aha" - German reaction to pretend that you are really interested while giving no f*ck.

Quite a lot will be humble bundle games.
Also what valve tend to do is not list a game as being available for Linux while it is is beta on steam unless you hunt for that game _________________

I know people have said the pastebin for the steam script is up but is not at the moment. Seems that pastebin.ca is down. Does anyone have what used to reside @ http://gentoo.pastebin.ca/raw/2339758 ? |

pastebin.ca is having some technical difficulties
unfortunately I do not seem to have the script locally... when the service is back up I will make a local copy and push it as a "gist" as well |

Im just casual gamer and mostly use only PS3 for gaming. Still i think this is one of the great achievements in linux/FOSS history. Im sure soon there will be great GPU/openGL support and wide range of games. I currently have only intel MHD4500 gpu but i surely will support valve for their choise on linux support. Im even considering buying more powerful laptop for gaming in near future. This is great news! _________________ https://github.com/defer- |

Hello,
I just installed steam according to the wiki and steam itself works, that unfortunately cannot be said of most games.
It "getting game X to work" a topic that should be discussed here or rather in the forums of the respective developer? |

Did you try to start Steam with
Code: | STEAM_RUNTIME=1 steam | ? |

That I did, however
Space-Chem is the only game that works right away.
DOTA2
DOTA2 Test
X3 Terran Conflict
X3 Albion Prelude
Can be installed, but not started, when klicking on "play" the screen flickers, in case of DOTA I get to see the valve video, an than I am back at my desktop.
X3 Reunion does not even install.
EDIT:
Here the console output when steam is started

gah, steam requires pulseaudio? damn, pulseaudio totally screws up heaps of things on my system.. mplayer for example will play half a second of audio then sit there and choke until I force-kill it
is there any way to have pulseaudio installed without it getting its sticky tendrils all the way through my sound system? |

Are you on x86?
It's not listed as a dependency (at our wikki) for amd64 (and I certainly don't have it), so the way I see it, it should work without it. However, I'm not entirely sure why it would be a x86-only dependency... so perhaps whatever Steam wants from it, is provided by the emul-linux-x86 on amd64?
That said, net-misc/networkmanager is also mentioned as an amd64 dependency, and I've not had that either! _________________ Kindest of regardses. |

If like me you're having problems with Steam after last update (gets stuck in a loop and won't start), the fix is to do rm -rf ~/.steam/steam/appcache |

Greetings,
I'm a noob regarding both gentoo and linux world (even though i'm slowly learning), and I'd like to have a clear suggestion on wether trying to install steam chrooting in 32bit and using the overlay or using multilibs in my normal environment (x86_64). From what I've read here, you suggest to avoid using the overlay, while people on the IRC channel have told me the opposite, saying the x86 emul is out of date and might easily sort problems. Is it possible to manually create a set in a 32bit chrooted environment, without using the overlay? And if so, how to create the chrooting wrapper script? (i've read that in the steam wiki, googled some about creating wrapper scripts but haven't understood much).
Thanks[/quote] |

@gastromush I wouldn't suggest setting up a chroot environment while you're a noob. Just install it from the overlay (without any chroot) and see if it works. If you encounter any problems you can always uninstall it and setup a chroot later. |

Newly added mesa with -r1 should support multilib. Try it. But I'm not sure since didn't tried it myself. |
