hi all.
i have a strange trouble.
from a day to another my GPU temperature increase until heat watchdog shutdown the VGA.

i have a radeon HD6950, using the open source drivers with the last radeon-ucode package ( obviously i rebuilt the kernel after emerging it )
i have radeon drivers built into kernel [ 3.8.13-gentoo ].

i used a air compressor to clean the GPU, but the troubles persist.
i switched to windows which have proprietary drivers [ 13.4 ] and the temperature stay around 50°C.
on gentoo i tried to boot in single mode and "# watch sensors".
even without Xorg the temperature increase over 65°C.

i'll try to boot another linux distro in the next days. ( i lost my live USB  )

for more infos:
kernel config
Xorg.0.log.old
messages ( cropped )

thanks in advance :)

foss dpm support for radeon cards was committed in 3.11, this is still an unstable release so you'll either have to wait or take the plunge.

the best I can recommend you to do is to try reapplying the thermal paste between the cooling system and the gpu switch (that is what I do)

Also if you are not doing intensive stuff atm you could enable the low power profile for your current kernel until you switch to 3.11

Code:

echo "low" > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile

It helps to keep my 4850 in my htpc be more silent and cool (and doesnt heat up the case and my cpu)
