Can anyone tell me when the first time any distribution of software with the name "Gentoo" on it came out. Wikipedia says "Initial release March 31, 2002".
The Gentoo website on it's history page says "Gentoo was offcially founded on 4th October 1999" and that it was initial created as Enoch Linux distribution.
A friend says that he was using an OS called "Gentoo" back in 1999, before Oct. Could that be possible? Just wondering.
Thanks.

That would make sense seeing as it was released March 2002.
But could someone have used it in 1999?
Thanks for getting back. |

Actually I had it around then too(not sure exactly). It was a small 1U appliance, blue with the Gentoo symbol on it.
Anyone remember these? |

(Enoch Linux) 0.75, December 1999
1.0, March 31, 2002
it was renamed to gentoo march, 31, 2002.... |

Thanks that's what I thought. Just trying to make sure it wasn't called gentoo anytime before
2002. My friend says it was called Gentoo when he used it in 1999. I think he's just confused.
I also saw this time line which verifies what you say.

There was a distro called Gentus in the late 90s, not related to Gentoo in any way. Your friend could have mistaken. |
