Hi,

I just finished an actual upgrade (gnome 3.8 sytemd ...)
Gnome 3.8 doesn't start, xdm is not found. This is already described in a different thread.

So, I would like to switch to systemd now.
My kernel is built with genkernel.

The old working entry in menu.lst is

Code:

title  Gentoo
root  (hd0,4)
kernel /kernel root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/sdc6  udev video=1920x1200-32
initrd=/boot/initramfs

To enable systemd I changed it to

Code:

title  Gentoo mit systemd
root  (hd0,4)
kernel /kernel root=/dev/sdc6 real_init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd udev video=1920x1200-32
initrd=/boot/initramfs

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd#Enabling_systemd

But the boot process ends up with
Code:

Mounting /dev/sdc6 as root
Using mount -t auto -o ro
The filesystem mounted at /dev/sdc6 does not appear do be a valid /
Could not find root block device

What am I missing ?
I suppose I haven't understood what was happening.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don't like to run the next world upgrade, because by now kdm and kde are at least working.

I masked /dev-lang/vala < 0.20.0.
How can I get rid of this blocking ?
Any ideas, please ?

To fix the kernel line keep the old root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/sdc6

If you can live without net-libs/gssdp then get rid of it (emerge -C or the like) and re-run emerge, because that package forces the version conflict between vala-0.20 and vala-0.14.
Somehow, [NS] does not apply here...

Yesterday I was having hard time with the nightmare blocks of vala conflict versions and accidentally found that gssdp ~arch solves the issue and the vala blocks went away. Still struggling with libsoup blocks though.

Thanks for the hint with gssdp !
It wasn't installed at all, but some of packages requires gssdp.
By putting gssp-0.14.3 into the portage.accept_keywords I could finally run the emerge @preserved_rebuild.

Now I can be sure that everything is compiled accordingly

In that case I got rid of it by putting these two statements into the accept_keyords:
Code:

package.accept_keywords:=net-libs/libsoup-2.42.2 ~amd64
package.accept_keywords:=net-libs/libsoup-gnome-2.42.2 ~amd64

This might help you as well.

Well, this upgrade isn't a pleasure at all

Thank you for this hint. I was not sure, if this should work.
Nevertheless, in my case it doesn't.

I tried this variations
Code:

kernel /kernel root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/sdc6 real_init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd udev video=1920x1200-32
Code:

kernel /kernel root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/sdc6 real_init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd

But received the described boot error
Quote:

Mounting /dev/sdc6 as root
Using mount -t auto -o ro
The filesystem mounted at /dev/sdc6 does not appear do be a valid /
Could not find root block device

I've already got these two in package.accept_keywords and the block persists. I finally managed to lift it by putting the packages depending on after 'emerge -cav libsoup' and the update went flawlessly. Still can't figure out how to add online accounts - after each entry the window dies and nothing is added. Issue with nm-applet which is inactive and showing no connections but networkmanager is doing its job properly - I have internet connection on eth and wlan after login.

I'm afraid, I don't.

I checked my kernel configuration according http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd and considered all mandatory and recommended settings.

I tried it with two machines
  • one with a complete instable (~amd64) gentoo installation, which is totally messed up now.
I'm just downgrading as far as possible to a stable gentoo with hopefully gnome 2.32 at the end.
  • one with a mixed setup, more or less stable base and gnome-shell.
In this case I'm going to try to mask gnome 3.8. and avoid systemd.
I'd like to get back to a working gnome-shell.
I'd light its 'lightweight' UI more than the KDE a used for several years before and have now.
So, I hope I will get a working one again and will not be forced to switch to systemd in the near future.

@mpcww

mmm to bad.

But you really do not have to use systemd to get gnome 3.8 running. I have a "reasonably" stable system running 3.8. Without really booting from systemd and just using init. Off course, because now ia am half way and everything is using the systemd USE, some things are broken.

But still, i can work and i really couldn't do without gnome 3.

So i will work on this some more, if i find a solution i will post it here.

Fine, I hope you have more success and I am looking forward to hear from you.

To work out your alternative appoach:

How do you start gnome ?
Are you using a different display manager than gdm, which seems to be hard bundled to systemd ?
Are you trying to unset the use flag systemd now ?
Probably not https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-965660-highlight-mask+systemd.html

ah yes.. the display manager..

I wanted lightDM.. had some compile errors.. so now temporarily using lxde-base/lxdm
it gets the job done..

and i am not unsetting anything for now.. because i still want to fix this asap ;-)

Thanks for encouraging me ;-)
I switched to lightdm (unstable), which works and can gnome 3.8 now.

Beside the gentoo wiki did you find any other source of actual documentation regarding grub/sysemd ?

Well thats also whats buggin me.. i did find some more stuf, but unfortunatly no new information.

weird thing is..
when the boot fails.. and you drop to the shell. it has already mounted my real root under the folder "/newroot"
so it kinda works but then it doesn't.

I did find a clou somewhere.. somebody wrote something like.. "be aware, if you use Initramfs systemd will be started within the Initramfs"
and nothing more.. But a cant find it anymore..

If there was a fundamental problem with intramfs und systemd, we probably would encounter more discussion on that topic.
As fas as I read serveral successful migrations to systemd has been reported.

Did you try already try a non-genkernel installation without initramfs ?

perhaps systemd located on /usr doesn't like a to be separated from /boot

My partition layout looks like that. (On both machines boot and usr are on different partitions)

Code:

arthur boot # mount
rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,relatime)
udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,nosuid,relatime,size=10240k,nr_inodes=997252,mode=755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,relatime,gid=5,mode=620,ptmxmode=000)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
/dev/sdc6 on / type ext4 (rw,noatime,discard,errors=remount-ro,commit=0)
/dev/sdc7 on /usr type ext4 (rw,noatime,discard,errors=remount-ro,commit=0)
tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,mode=755)
shm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
configfs on /sys/kernel/config type configfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
cgroup_root on /sys/fs/cgroup type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=10240k,mode=755)
openrc on /sys/fs/cgroup/openrc type cgroup (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,release_agent=/lib64/rc/sh/cgroup-release-agent.sh,name=openrc)
cpuset on /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset type cgroup (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime, cpuset)
cpu on /sys/fs/cgroup/cpu type cgroup (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime, cpu)
cpuacct on /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuacct type cgroup (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime, cpuacct)
devices on /sys/fs/cgroup/devices type cgroup (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime, devices)
freezer on /sys/fs/cgroup/freezer type cgroup (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime, freezer)
blkio on /sys/fs/cgroup/blkio type cgroup (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime, blkio)
/dev/sdb7 on /vm type ext4 (rw,noatime,commit=0)
/dev/sdb5 on /var type ext4 (rw,noatime,commit=0)

Well got a bit closer..

build my own kernel without genkernel... hit a not syncing error..
fix for that was... build a kernel with my disk controller IN kernel.. not a module..

After that it booted ans i saw systemd doing its stuff.. finally hit a black screen.. but thats probably nvidia driver or something..
now i need to figure out how to unset XDM so i drop to the shell ;-)
Getting closer by the minute..

@ medspec

i had to rip i915 out of my kernel to get consoles back.

as root

Code:

rc-update del xdm default

i had separate /boot when i was systemd 2-3 months ago.

Good news !!

I wonder, if the genkernel variation would work with the controller code in the kernel ?

@666threesixes666
i have it as a module, so thats probably not resulting in my black screen.

plz give some info on your setup. please see this wiki. i915 was compiled in and id get black screens from the start of kernel loading, module would make sense for screens to work until the module is loaded, then go black hole on you. try compiling it out, unless you're sure you have hardware that needs it.

what kinda info do you like?

First of.. i removed the i915(and al other graphic stuf i dont need)

i remember also getting this black screen when xdm is not started and the nvidia module gets loaded
but thats normally not a problem because xdm gets started automatically.

does systemd also look at the settings in rc-update -s ?
or does systemd has its own thing?

But i will test is later today.. hopefully my network gets up in systemd boot, so i can connect to it using ssh and use the commandline ;-)

Today I migrated to gnome-3.8 and systemd successfully.
I have everything /boot /usr / /var and others as being separate partitions. Using grub2 and systemd working great. Also using kdm as login manager. I don't use genkernel. Just compile kernel myself. Also I use dracut to create the initramfs.
What is your latest situation?
