Hola,

What do you guys think about the Ubuntu Edge?

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ubuntu-edge

I actually went ahead and signed up for one. If they manage to pull this off this could be a huge step towards people actually being in charge of their handheld devices. Plus the concept is cool and for what you get the price is not that high. Just a bit annoying to have to pay a few months in advance.

How so? It is backed by Canonical so if they get the 32 million Canonical takes the risk in case there will be price increase etc. If they don´t get all the money it will be refunded. Where is the scam in this?

It is also on the first page of http://www.ubuntu.com/, lots of tech sites have written about it and Mark Shuttleworth did an IamA on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1j166z/hi_im_mark_shuttleworth_founder_of_ubuntu/

So, how're they going to refund the money they're supposed to be using for developing "new" product?

Are you being paid to spam about this?

Nope, I am not being paid to "spam" about this. The only incentive I have in this is that I would like the project to work out because I think it would be great if people could get in control of their handheld devices.

As for your other question about the refund I suggest that you read the project page and get a grasp of how crowd funded projects usually work.

I ask again. Why do you think it is a scam?

I have no interest in going through spam.

And if smells like a scam, it is scam. The burden of proof lies with you to prove this isn't a scam and you're not spamming.

But if you look at it it's not a scam

Wow, why the report? I thought you were just trolling, notageek, I didn't realise you actually thought this was a scam. Unless you think crowdfunding is a scam, which is a subject for another thread.

Perhaps we can move on past notageeks paranoia and discuss the real thing now?

How interesting would it be for you guys to run proper linux with full control on your handheld devices?
What do you think about the concept of using the phone also as a desktop by docking it at home/in the office?

Paranoid, my ass.

You don't even have a product and yet you expect people to fund your project. Why not first show a working prototype, so that we know you're not scamming?

@tobbebobbe: And why are you so keen on us to contribute?

Let me understand - you pay NOW up to $800, a year after you receive a presumably outdated phone and all that year you're stuck with your old phone?
Sounds like a deal to me

There would have been a small chance of me supporting this before the disruptive events around Mir - now I'll prefer Jolla over the flawed dual boot attempt of the brown one.

Also, there's no way any kind of hardware caught inside a smartphone box will be able to power a 'full fledged desktop' a year from now, not even close.

Proper linux?

Can I take Ubuntu off it and use something else?

If it lives up to the vague hype on its specs without costing a left nut I'd buy one. However, I'm skeptical enough that Canonical can pull this off that I'll wait and see.

But do you actually think it is so expensive, compared to other high-end smartphones? A Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One costs about 800 USD in Europe. The disadvantage is of course that most people pay for such a phone with a monthly charge on their phone bill, where you would have to pay up front several months in advance for the Edge.

Price is strongly affected by economy of scale. Do you think they're going to sell as many of these as Samsung will sell of the Galaxy S4?
