Hallo Forum,
I wonder whether anybody could assist in debugging a problem whereby my machine reboots instead of powering off when issuing the command
Interesting enough this is not fully predictable as sometimes the machine actually turns off power when the command is entered (I'd guess in around 5-10% of cases only). According to the output on the console, the machine however always enters runlevel 0. Usingdoes not change anything.
Startup errors can usually be tracked by dmesg / syslog, but how do I track shutdown issues after syslog has stopped?
The system is a 3.9.5-hardened gentoo linux running as a dom0 under xen 4.2.2
Any ideas on how to track down the issue would be very welcome.

Just a quick update: The problem is now solved - the system powers down reliably now. The resolution involved patching the kernel and the issue was caused by using the IOMMU and the Intel IGD driver.
Further details can be found here. This thread also describes how to debug powerdown issues over a serial console which proved to be very useful.
The follow-up thread here goes into further details with XEN developers and describes the final resolution which requires three kernel patches (well, actually reversing two commits and applying a third patch).
