I just installed libreoffice-bin and it opens like a thunder, never seen this in sabayon or ubuntu. Something like 1s in gentoo vs more than 5s in sabayon/ubuntu  . Although, don't know if it's something related with java (I don't have java in my gentoo box).

ola, I compile mine libreoffice, it also sets itself up under a second...

I have no java installed, but my libreoffice starts in 3 secs at first launch. The next launch is about 1 sec (shared libraries already cached).
What version you have installed?
v 3.6.6.2 here. |

I didn't compiled mine, it was the libreoffice-bin package.
Just to comparison, at least firefox ins't quick like this, even compiled my firefox startup is very close ubuntu/sabayon's firefox.

3.6.6.2 too
I'm asking this because it's so quick that I'm starting to think I have missed some important feature. I used default libreoffice-bin flags during installation. Maybe the non-bin libreoffice version has more functionalities?

Takes about 6 secs for my libreoffice writer to come up on my core2quad, raid5. I'm using libreoffice-bin. Once cached it takes only a second to come up.
I don't have java installed either...
What disk/cpu/RAM do you have?

This seems very curious, my core2quad takes 8 sec or so (counting in my head, not with stopwatch) but my i7 takes a second (maybe less), both after freshly flushing caches. I guess my raid5 must be really slow at loading in all the (small?) files? (The i7 has an SSD.)

I'm referring to static linking in the libreoffice binary that you are using. Which would have been done before you downloaded it - it's not something that Portage adds.
An SSD does not have to wait for seek time & rotational latency. |

Well, if it were statically linked, I should see the benefit of it on my core2quad but apparently does not - and why I'm seeing such a large discrepancy between other machines that have a single HDD (the only thing I can think of is if it got cached without knowing about it).
Obviously the SSD should be a lot faster, and it is.
