hello,my laptop has two video card, one intel 4600 ,the other is nvidia GTX 765M。

I try to install xorg-server , in /etc/.portage/make.conf I set VIDEO_CARDS="intel nvidia"

xorg-server
nvidia-drivers xf86-video-intel
gnome-light xfce4-meta are all compiled with no error

if use startx ,and as root, desktop will show ,and intel driver is work
but if not startx as root , desktop will show ,but I can't do anything ,click mouse ,keyboard is unable to work
when I use gdm to start X, Xorg .0.log is like this

Do you want them both to work at the same time or do you wan't to switch between them?
I guess you wan't the internal one for desktop usage?

Two things come to mind:
- is your xorg-server built with suid ?
- is your libdrm built with intel ?

yes,it's build with suid

I think i've built intel libdrm. cos when boot, before gdm start , the display resolution is 1920*1080 ,and there are 8 penguins at top of display

now if I use intel 4600 video card only
that means
1.set VIDEO_CARD="intel" in make.conf
2.emerge -C nvidia-drivers
3.choose related intel libdrm CONFIG in kernel

the xorg-server can initiate correctly, gnome is all OK.

but if I desable intel , enable nvidia
that means
1.set VIDEO_CARD="nvidia" or "nvidia intel"
2 emerge nvidia-drivers
3. enable or disable related intel libdrm CONFIG in kernel

Xorg-server error message will be like this: (same as before)

[ 200.189] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initiate mode change.
[ 200.189] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to complete mode change

how to use nvidia card ?

now intel card is enough for use . better I can use nvidia too , I wish.

Hy,

if you want use only nvidia card, switch off in BIOS optimus mode and then change to nvidia drivers.
Btw, I tryed do get both of them to work on my W530 but without success, i don't need external monitor right now,
thus i'm stick with intel, gut perfomance and nice battery life (~8h)

now I can use intel card only or nouveau card only, which are both built in kernel libDRM.
but offical nvidia drivers ,whatever I try ,failed.

in BIOS there isn't any options to disable intel video card.

whatever,
intel card 4600 is enough for me in linux.

PS,you battery is so strong !!~~~

Hy,

do you have options in your BIOS to switch beetween "discrete" or "integrated" video cards?
do you have set your configuration for nvidia card properly?

If you want use ONLY intel card, install bbswitch to disable nvidia card at boot time,
it's will give you some watts

Hy,

the best way is to add into your "/etc/conf.d/modules"
Code:
...
modules="bbswitch"
...

and here is my "/etc/modprobe.d/bbswitch.conf"
Code:
options bbswitch load_state=0

when boot the system, message says "failed to load module".

if I make && make load,
ERROR message is "No such device"

I also tried at linux Mint and ubuntu livecd system , and got the same error.

I tried to select all CONFIG I could about ACPI / PROC in kernel , and still this error.

some trial environment:
(I've emreged nvidia-drivers or nouveau,and set VIDEO_VARD="intel nvidia/nouveau" in make.conf)

(but /etc/x11/xorg.conf doesn't contain any device about nvidia or nouveau ,because if I do that ,xorg-serverwon't start correctly)

Thank you very much ,all the same.

yes,I had eselect opengl to xorg-11 in some trial.

when use nvidia-drivers
there are two choices in opengl list, xorg and nvidia.
install nvidia-drivers will auto eselect opengl to nvidia.
and when emerge -C it ,it eselect opengl back to x11 again.

when use nouveau , there's not a choice about "nouveau" in opengl list.

in linux mint , it use nouveau driver , and it print " no such device" too.

I'm sorry my laptop is not available temporarily. after work ,about one hour later , I 'll post it.
thank you
