I have a problem
Code: |
~ $ lxterminal
No protocol specified
(lxterminal:8641): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
|
This is what I get after using my desktop for sometime, I'm not sure what's causing this. When i startx, all is fine and dandy for a long time then boom this error appears when I try to open an application in X.
Any more info you need just ask. _________________ Would you mind telling me why there is ricearoni in my coffee!?

Hello,
I have the same problem, and so does this guy/girl: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7346870.html
so at least we are not alone...
It started a few days ago, when you first run X everything works fine, then after a while, when you try to start a new program you get:
Code: |
No protocol specified
cannot open display: :0
|
I use Openbox but I've created a new user for testing and started X with the default no-wm, and after a while... 'No protocol specified' 'cannot open display: :0'. So it's nothing from the Openbox conf.
Google has not been very helpful, it returns results about a different issue where people can't launch apps as root from a normal user spawned X server. But the solutions for that problem don't seem to work with ours, and after playing a bit with xauth and xhost, I ran out of ideas...
I really don't know what's going on. |

Since this is no longer on the unanswered list, may I inquire if you have checked you messages (ctl+alt+F12) or your Xorg log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log)? _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |

#works fine
mkultra@mksrv [ ~ ]$ echo $PATH

looks like its in other distributions... here's what arch has to say about it. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=122848 |

Thank you, I'm not sure if that archlinux link is describing the same problem, they where getting the same error but not in the same situation. Exporting XAUTHORITY did nothing.
I'm not doing anything with xrandr or git, just starting normal X apps like xterm in the local machine with the same user that started X. Everything works fine for some time (usually a couple of hours or so) then all of a sudden I can no longer start X apps...
My $PATH, btw, stays the same before and after the b0rking.
Code: |
$ echo $PATH
/home/joan/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/home/joan/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.7.3:/usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/avr/gcc-bin/4.7.3:/usr/games/bin

I am also having the problem that I cannot use any programs that rely on X after a certain time.
I found out why: my hostname is being changed from just the short name, which is in /etc/conf.d/hostname to the fully qualified domain name, i.e. the short name PLUS the domain name, e.g. host.this.domain.com
This happens after some time. What I have not found out: WHICH program resets my hostname.
I suspect wicd but do not know how to confirm that.
My simple workaround is to do
as root (or otherwise sudo) whenever access to X server does not work:
Code: | hostname SHORTHOSTNAME |

Hey, I just checked (rebooted) and I can confirm the hostname change. Will try your workaround as soon as the problem appears.
However, I don't have 'wicd' installed, so we need another suspect... |

Have you tried DISPLAY=":0" instead of DISPLAY=":0.0"? (For the other user, swap these) Also, did you try `xhost +` to enable all hosts (for debugging purposes)?
Hostname could change due to /etc/init.d/hostname I think; or otherwise, some DHCP related script might be changing it. |

I did try 'sudo xhost +' on the previous boot, and it works, you can start programs after the hostname has changed, though I hadn't realized about the hostname change until georg.mayr's post.
The DISPLAY variable stays the same all the time, I tried to specify DISPLAY=":0", didn't tried DISPLAY=":0.0". |

5 hours ago I masked =net-misc/dhcpcd-6.0.2, downgraded to =net-misc/dhcpcd-5.99.7-r1 and the problem seems to be gone. I hope.
I think something in =net-misc/dhcpcd-6.0.2 was changing the hostname. |

Can you please file that as a bug at https://bugs.gentoo.org? |
