pjp, this is maybe the third time that you write "soccer" in a thread. So I can't watch this any longer:
it's called FOOTBALL, not soccer!!! _________________ "I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can't even express these things properly because I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid limiting spoken language!" |

Sounds like a YP not an MP. When I write soccer, you (apparently) understand the intent. When you write football, it can have more than one meaning. And people criticize us about cultural insensitivity. _________________ I can saw a woman in two, but you won't want to look in the box when I'm through.

football has only one meaning.
soccer isn't even understood in most places.
Then there is handegg also called 'american football'
or 'aussie rules football' also called 'outdoor bar brawl'.
But if somebody writes 'football' only football is meant. Nothing else.

Few years ago I managed to get consensus in a bar in Berkeley that fotball is fotball and handegg is handegg. I was so proud. _________________ “If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him” |

Even then most people and governing bodies give their "football" types and regulatory bodies give their sport a different name ("Australian Rules football", "Rugby Football Union", "Gaelic Football") to distinguish it from "actual" football. The one exception to this is in the US. Hence why the US is in the wrong and the rest of the world is correct. |

Thank you for proving football does not have one meaning. As for the other, my money is on non-English speaking countries which enjoy criticizing the US include soccer in their repertoire. _________________ I can saw a woman in two, but you won't want to look in the box when I'm through.

then why is it called American football and not just football. If football really had more than one meaning then the correct name for handegg would just be football, but it isn't, its American Football.
Fact is football is football and one sport is called that, there are plenty of derivatives and to distinguish them from the root game they are given additional wording to distinguish it. _________________ The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter

I've never heard it referred to as American Football, except perhaps by someone outside the US. _________________ I can saw a woman in two, but you won't want to look in the box when I'm through.
