PostPosted: Wed Jul 03, 2013 10:34 am    Post subject: Internal microphone does not work Reply with quote

Hi everybody I have the following audio devices:

* Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Trinity HDMI Audio Controller
* Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller (rev 01)

Everything seems to work fine but the internal microphone. I have a Gentoo system running kernel 3.10.0, pulseaudio and alsa. Despite all my efforts the only thing I can get from the mic is a ow white noise. If anyone can help I will provide all the needed informations. (P.S.: I've checked on the net and I've found tons of requests like the one I'm posting but none provided me the right solution).
Thank you in advance,
Paolo

Hi Paolo,

Please post the outpost of lspci -n, and I'll see if I can dig up any advice.

Best to file a bug at https://bugzilla.kernel.org and try to contact the snd_hda_intel developers; looking this through, I don't see anything promising as a direct solution.

Yep, that's snd-hda-intel. Put the output of lspci -n into the "Debian GNU/Linux device driver check page" section of http://kernel-seeds.gentoostudio.org/working.html and make sure you have all of the correct drivers installed.

Better yet, first grab a kernel seed from the link above and then make sure all of the correct drivers are selected. Let me know whether that helps or not, or if you decide to try a kernel seed but have questions not answered on the kernel seeds site. Well worth it!

I don't know what kernel seeds are. I looked at your "Gentoo Studio" distribution and I really am interested in your work , expecially because I'm a musician...

There's a link to "Pappy's Kernel Seeds" in my link. The site explains in detail what they are and what they do. I didn't create them - I just host a mirror for them because kernel seeds make Gentoo better.

If you want to go full "Gentoo Studio", I recommend you use the stage 4 installation. Over the years, I've figured out how to resolve many issues related to getting various audio and MIDI programs and libs installed, and using the stage 4 installation will save you a lot of headache. Let me know if you have any questions. :)

I tried to compile a rt kernel using the seeds. I noticed that the menu/slider "Capture" disappeared from alsamixer. This should have something to do with the kernel but, at this point, I would like to know how can I recover the "capture" thing.

Hm, that means the microphone isn't being detected. I wonder if you have a separate mic on a USB bus. What's the output of lsusb? If you don't have that command, emerge usbutils to get it.

Sometimes the mic is part of the web cam. Does your web cam work with your current kernel config?

Webcam works perfectly. I tried to check out kernel options to see whether there are options to be set but didn't find anything specific...

At this point I think that te problem is that webcam mic might be controlled in some other ways that I don't now. Do you know whether there are tools to veriify how the mic s connected to the sound card? Obviously it's not a hw problem because it works perfectly under windows....

I went back to your lspci. I want to know what that Trinity HDMI audio controller is. Maybe the mic is there. I couldn't find anything for it, though, so let me ask something else, to make sure all the bus drivers are present: Do you have XHCI, OHCI and EHCI enabled in the kernel?

Yes I have every *HCI built in, UHCI included. I don't think Trinity has to do wiith this...
I checked out on Windows and it seems that the microphone is a separate device, specifically a microsoft microphone...

If it really is hardware built by Microsoft, you may be out of luck. Fortunately, external microphones are cheap and many of those would be supported by snd-usb-audio if they're USB microphones.

I have an idea. Get an Ubuntu Live DVD and boot with that. If your microphone works, investigate what drivers the Live DVD uses and try to find and load those in your Gentoo kernel config.

I had the same idea: I tried with kubuntu, ubuntu and sabayon (gentoo based binary distro) but no luck at all... the point is that I remember that everything was working perfecty at some point, while I was installin gentoo... unfortunately I cannot remember (and I actually don't know) when the microphone stopped working... I also uninstalled Pulseaudio to make things easier to track but it eventually didn't help much...

If you had it working under Gentoo once, I wonder if there was an earlier kernel version that, for some reason, worked with this microphone. If you can remember what kernel version that was, that would be another road to explore.

But the fact that you've already tried other distros with no luck tells me this might in fact be Microsoft-manufactured hardware. Microsoft is Linux-hostile. That doesn't mean it won't ever work under Linux - it might simply mean it's new hardware that hasn't been given a driver by some kindly soul in the Linux world yet. It might be easier to pick up a standard USB external mic you can clip to your laptop and use snd-usb-audio. If you make a new post about this for recommendations about which external mic works well with Linux, I'm sure someone will have something to say about it.

I recently had to update my gentoo system (emerge world... you now). Well, after the update (which didn't involve the kernel) the mic started working. Then I did an emerge @preserved-libs and, sadly, it stopped working again. At this point to me it's clear that:
1- The kernel and the drivers are ok
2- It should be a configuration problem lost in some conf file I really don't know

Plus I discovered that the mic is a Conexant and not a Microsoft mic.

I'll keep trying
