Hello I just finished installing KDE, with some complications,

see here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-962854.html

Now that KDE is up and running there is an additional problem.

I cannot open a filebrowser. Wenn I klick on Konqueror, or hat "Home" in the KDE-Startmenu nothing happens.

The KDE-Texteditor fires up without any problems, as well as other applications.

What happens if you try to run them from a terminal? Does it show any interesting output?

Dolphin is the default file manager in KDE now.

Second, can you post the output from running Konqueror from a virtual terminal? The error may be informative.

EDIT: beaten to the post.

OK thank you,

I do not necessarily need Konqueror, dolphin is fine and does the job in my book.

One additional question:

Is there a webbrowser integrated in KDE, if so where can I find it? - If not which one do you suggest, those documentations I found regarding firefox seemed quite outdated, since gentoo does not know the packages anymore mentioned in said guides.

Firefox follows ESR (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/faq/) and is not out-of-date. I personally use Google Chrome, I'd say try both and see which one fits you best... :)

Yes. Unfortunately, its Konqueror. Be warned, it isn't very good. In my opinion, Firefox or chromium is better. There is a binary version of Firefox (firefox-bin) which I recommend as Firefox takes several hours to compile.

EDIT: beaten again!

I did not mean that firefox is outdated, what I wanted to say is, that certain guide on how to install firefox on gentoo are not up to date.

I am now emerging firefox, I'll come back to you once this is finished.

Unless I'm mistaken you can indeed emerge and run most of the browser packages without any additional steps (except for maybe checking the USE flags).

I would hazard a guess that this is because once you get used to portage there really isn't anything you need to know other than the package name. One big advantage I have found over other distributions is that the names are intuitive.

X and KDE make sense to maintain a guide for. The are both a complex set of packages that have configuration options and a high probability of having a frustrated user on the other end. Packages like firefox are simple. They should just work. The information about configuring these packages can be found here since use flags are what count.

Hello again,

it worked more or less.

Emerging firefox (none bin) failed due to a compling error similar to the one we experienced with KDE - no idea if that is a ram problem or whatever

Tried the bin-version that, which worked

This is the first post I am writing from a gentoo-machine.

Since I never used Linux before, I am quite content with myself :)

For some reason I have a english keyboard layout in firefox or is that KDE?

And the font itself does not look so nice as on my other mashine, are there option for clearfont or something like that?

Not using KDE here, but try System Settings -> Regional & Language -> Keyboard Layout; in older versions it was in System Settings -> (Hardware ->) Input Devices -> Keyboard -> Layout.

See http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Fontconfig for a guide on that; but before you do that, check if you find relevant options in System Settings of KDE which may override fontconfig. Least say, one of both should affect your DE and applications; as a side note, you can also configure individual fonts in applications. As some fontconfig settings only apply to certain fonts or font properties, you might not see the changes everywhere.

KDE will override these settings and they shouldn't be hard to find. I'm afraid I haven't run KDE since I discovered tiling window manages a few months ago and can't recall exactly where the settings are, but they shouldn't be too hard to find.
