Hello,

this is the first time I am setting up gentoo, the first time trying to set up the X Server,

I followed the guide, that can be found here:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

However, when typing "startx" it tells me:

Quote:

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Reading on in said guide I tried setting the resoultion by hand.

The guide suggestet editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-monitor.conf

And the peculiar thing is this: The folder "X11" does not exist in the first place!

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the answer, I have to admit, the link you posed, may contain the answer, however I am not able to follow it.

The reason being:

Quote:
First, make sure your kernel configuration has CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE enabled.

How to I do that? Where do I have to look? What commands do I have to use, to figure that out?

I build my Kernel with genkernel ... does that mean it shoud be enabled? If not, do I have to compile a new kernel?

Quote:
If you cannot tell from the screen right away (you are not sure what a framebuffer mode looks like, or you had another fb driver active), look into /proc/fb

What is this /proc/fb? It seems to be none existent on my system.

Dippmopser,

Go into make menuconfig, press / and enter FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE. The case does not matter.

The search will show you where it is and what it depends on. It may be invisible until all of the dependencies are set correctly, so use the search again ...

It is on by default for genkernel.

That would be your framebuffers, so it appears you don't have the option turned on to me.

In `genkernel --menuconfig all` you would want to search (use the slash key /) for FRAMEBUFFER and then navigate to that option and turn it on; yes, you will need to rebuild the kernel.

OK I compliled a new kernel...

... now I have another problem:

GRUB is gone.

Don't ask my why, but after copying the new kernel to /boot, the /boot folder now only contains the new kernel, no grub folder or anything else.

reemerging grub did not fix this ... any ideas?

Dippmopser,

It looks like you forgot to mount your boot partition, so you copied your new kernel to the /boot directory on the root partition.
Grub will be there once you mount your boot partition to /boot. That will hide your new kernel.

If you use extX filesystems, the top level of a real partition contains a directory called lost+found.
You can use this as an indicator to determine if you are looking in the folder called /boot or the boot partition mounted at the folder called /boot.

Yes that may have been the case,

however I did a complete reinstall in the meantime, trying to setup the kernel right from the start.

Now my system fails to boot for whatever reasons.

Therefor I suggest to close this thread and I come back to you, once I have a somewhat working system again.

You may have forgotten to include disk controller, include file systems or to enable a crucial option like CONFIG_TMPFS, CONFIG_DEVTMPFS or CONFIG_DEVTMPFS_MOUNT.

Thanks for all those suggestions:

What I did is the following:

On my fist install, I followed this guide

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml

step by step, using genkernel.

That resulted in no networkcard after reboot, since udev (since version 197 or bigger as far as I gather) for some nebulous purpose renames the network card from eth0 to something else.

I was able to fix this problem see here:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-962588.html

Thereafter my networkcard functioned properly an I tried to install the X Server.

The emerge-process finished without errors, however "startx" resulted in no screens found.

Now I did a second install to have a clean slate, since I tried this and that and since I am really not sure what I am doing, I thought I might have messed some things up.

So again I followed the guide mentioned above, but made one deviation, I configured the kernel manually, with all the options mentioned in said guide and the options mentioned in the X-Server Guide, see here:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

I compiled this kernel and continued with the initial guide.

After rebooting the system at one point stops right in the middel of the boot process.

=> I am now comiling a new Kernel using genkernel again, to see I the problem is with the kernel or something else.

Should that fail as well, could someone of you tell me, what to enable in make menuconfig, and what useflags to set, so that I hopefully get a System that is able to run KDE via XServer, since I do not know, what else to try.

EDIT: Here we go again, the system now works again, the problem remains:

Fatal server error:
no screens found.

I'll be damned tough I am trying the nvidia drivers right now (instead of nouveau) and I'm following, what can be found here:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVidia/nvidia-drivers

When I no type "startx" the screen turns black for a while and than I am back at console, at least the screen not found issue is now gone ... I think we are getting close.

However one other thing still bothers me:

The guide mentions somthing about "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

The problem is, that there is no "X11" folder. Any idea why?

Oh and one additional thing ... is it ok, to post all those log files to the forums or should I just post the link to pastebin or wherever they can be found?

As for the logs, usually pastebins are preferred, as they're tend to be too long to be read in a forum in any convenient way.

But...
You're not really getting anywhere, as it's still unknown if the initial problem was solved.
The latest log shows only that things work fine with nvidia binary blob, not why it didn't work with nouveau or if it would work with it now.

OK,

well I have no problem with the nvidia drivers.

I emerged KDE as mentioned in the KDE-Guide.

When I now type /etc/init.d/xdm start something happens.

When I repeat this, it says xdm has already been started.

My question now is:

how to get to the KDE-Desktop

`nvidia-xconfig` will generate one.

mkdir will make one.
I wouldn't recommend running nvidia-xconfig or X -configure or any other automatic creation tools, they create bloated outdated xorg.conf.

I believe it doesn't work without a config, or at least from what I remember some time ago; if needed, it can always be renamed or removed. Granted, don't overwrite an existing config.

Yes, nVidia driver needs a minimal xorg.conf, it is a four-liner.

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
EndSection

Everything beyond this is tweaking, not needed for initial setup.

OK thank you, I'll try that.

Right now I am installing those programms mentioned in the KDE-Guide (I overread those the first time...)

Quote:
ConsoleKit: Enables the ConsoleKit framework for defining and tracking users, login sessions and seats.
D-Bus: Enables use of the D-Bus message bus system.
polkit: Enables the polkit framework for controlling privileges for system-wide services.
udev: Enables support for udev Linux dynamic and persistent device naming.
udisks: Enables support for some storage related services.

One question:

The guide says, one should run

Code:
emerge --ask --changed-use --deep @world

After each program has been emerged...

...my system requires quite some time to complete this operation...

Am I right to assume, that it is enough to run this only one time, once every program has been emerged or is it really necassary to run it for ever programm seperatly, since do not see any program specific parameters.

What guide is that.
Basically, you should run emerge -e @world after you install the base system, to build everything with your customized make.conf.
After that you just do emerge -av foo

Oh sorry,

this one:

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE

is that outdated?

EDIT:
That being, since the problems now have not so much to do, with X Server, as with KDE, I will start a new thread.

See here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7335460.html#7335460

And thanks for the help so far.
