|
|
Hi all,
I've been using Gentoo for more over than 5 years or so and just had to install it a couple of times (for my laptop and for a server) so I'm not so literate about installation tips and tricks.
So the problem is that I got a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 14z) and it sports these network cards (according to lspci):
Code: |
07:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 2230 (rev c4)
09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR8162 Fast Ethernet (rev 10)
|
For the wired connection (Atheros) I saw that I need the alx module but a modprobe alx gives an error. The module is not on the livecd (amd64).
A modprobe iwlwifi does work but there's also something missing as I can not get anything apart from lo on iwconfig output.
Thus, if I'm not mistaken, I really can not install Gentoo on my new laptop, right?
Which options do I have to be able to have network on it? I just tried a Fedora 19 live cd and the wifi worked (did not try the wired connection). If I install Fedora first and then boot the Gentoo livecd, can I use the alx module on Fedora's root partition? Or that will not work?
Thanks in advance and let me know if I should post more details, I will gladly provide them.

You might be able to get the iwlwifi to work if you put the firmware for it (available in the sys-kernel/linux-firmware package) on an USB stick and then copy it to /lib/firmware/.
If that doesn't work you might be able to compile the alx module and put it in the right folder in /lib/modules/, but maybe there is firmware needed for that too. |
