i suspect /var/tmp/portage/ directories are not purging sources. i suspect half baked packages source build directories are not purged. my laptops compiz excessive power loads, same version as desktops and desktop works fine, and previous gentoo install compiz same version worked fine also. failed build logs should be exported to a log directory with attempt-1.log attempt-2.log and attempt-latest.log symlinked to last failed attempt.

some packages can not tolerate unclean source build directories. some packages can not tolerate make clean, and require untar rather than "cleaned" source build directories.

Every time you emerge something it does blow away the respective directory in /var/tmp/portage, at least in my default setup machine. Then if the emerge fails, the build is kept in that directory...

Did you want it to resume failed merges or something?

no im saying i highly suspect its resuming failed merges instead of blowing them away.... & exporting failure logs to a more appropriate place.

It's not. The logs are distinct for each build, if enabled, though.
