that is, it can open them (if i simply rename them to .html) but for some reason it treats local .shtml files is if it can't open them, and asks where to save them instead. there doesn't seem to be any internal (to chrome) database of mime type / file association stuff, and setting google-chrome.desktop as the default handler for shtml (using xdg-mime) has no effect.
i have local mirrors of sites with dozens of .shtml links, so i don't want to rename all the files, and in any case, firefox opens them without any problems...and since chrome is perfectly capable of opening them as soon as they're renamed, surely there must be a fix for how chrome handles these links?

I'm not sure where chrome is getting its mime info from, but /etc/mime.types on my system already lists .shtml as text/html and it seems to work here. You might need to run `update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime`. |
