Hello all,

I've noticed that Chromium 28 (28.0.1500.45) is incredibly slow when rendering certain pages. For instance, if I search for a restaurant, and then go to their Google+ page, it hangs whilst loading many of the elements. I've fought to find common themes between each of these sites, and the only thing that I've found thus far is that any time the halt occurs, the "GPU Process" is listed in the Chromium Task Manager. Therefore, I would assume that there is a problem with GPU acceleration.

Have any of you seen similar problems with the latest few ~ builds of Chromium? What other information would be helpful in diagnosing the problem further?

Cheers,
Nathan Zachary

Hmmm... I'd suspect Blink!
Afaik chromium 28 switched to Blink for its rendering engine.

It will be interesting to compare with Opera > 12.15 as they announced their intention to follow google and switch from presto.

Blink being a fork of webkit, do you experiment similar slow-downs when using webkit ?

Yes, I'm experiencing same, for instance this and sometimes even newegg.com.

Do you have any red lines in about:gpu?

Yup. But I should describe the problem better. It takes ages to load some sites, once the page is displayed everything works fine.

Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Compositing: Hardware accelerated
3D CSS: Hardware accelerated
CSS Animation: Accelerated
WebGL: Hardware accelerated
WebGL multisampling: Hardware accelerated
Flash 3D: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable
Flash Stage3D: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable
Flash Stage3D Baseline profile: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable
Texture Sharing: Hardware accelerated
Video Decode: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Video: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Panel Fitting: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration disabled.
Rasterization: Software only. Hardware acceleration disabled.

Edit: When started in terminal I get this
Code:
[16045:16050:0615/114244:ERROR:gpu_watchdog_thread.cc(209)] The GPU process hung. Terminating after 10000 ms.
[16056:16061:0615/114257:ERROR:gpu_watchdog_thread.cc(209)] The GPU process hung. Terminating after 10000 ms.
[16067:16072:0615/114309:ERROR:gpu_watchdog_thread.cc(209)] The GPU process hung. Terminating after 10000 ms.
after this delay the site loads.

Same problem here. If I had to take a guess I'd say that everyone on this thread is running the nvidia binary drivers?

As a workaround, you can start chrome/chromium with --disable-gpu which disables GPU acceleration but also prevents the hiccups.

My gpu "stuff" got completely nuked, give this a try if the same happened for you when updating to v28:

Go to your settings, and untick Use hardware acceleration when available. Then restart as the popup suggests, then tick it again and restart again, as suggested.
Your chrome://gpu/ will then become un-nuked.

See if it solves any issues you were having :)

dolohow, that second error I remember seeing also.
I'm on my Arch Linux install atm and the same thing with their Chromium 28, currently I have systemd holding almost 30 coredumps for me. So I don't think it is Gentoo specific.

Small correction/addition to my previous post, it seems at least on this box I enabled Override software rendering list in chrome://flags also.

I think I gonna downgrade to 27* and wait for a better solution. For me chromium freezes all the time and also I experiencing some bugs with tabs.

For the time being, I just disabled hardware acceleration completely. It's not a solution at all, but it will work for now. I have also seen the problem on my Arch installations, so I agree that it is not a Gentoo-specific bug.

Is anyone aware of an appropriate chromium or nvidia bug report upstream? My search didn't come up with an exact match to this issue.

I think with this version 28 was marked as stable by mistake. Just look at new release of beta channel: http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/2013/06/beta-channel-update_19.html

Also, new release of stable channel http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/2013/06/stable-channel-update_18.html after http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/2013/06/stable-channel-update_17.html

Please see https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=471198 . More data is needed there, especially if you can repro with google-chrome and submit a crash report (not sure about hangs though).

I have no real data to add there that hasn't already been put forward.
Still on my Arch box atm but I can however say that I just packaged current chrome dev (29.0.1541.2-207000) and it works as expected OOTB as well as after setting various things in chrome://flags as I usually do. The only feedback it gives me is the two small errors/warns shown in comment #20 on the bug.

Paweł provided a patch in bug 471198, and it serves as a nice workaround for the time being.

Thanks, Paweł.
