Hello, my setup is a bit unusual. I'm looking to make it a bit more convenient. The local machine runs Gentoo (duh) + XFCE + SLIM but I also have a Gentoo machine running kde + kdm in VirtualBox (VB) on a server physically remotely located. To run a session on the VB machine, I:
  • ctrl-alt-F2, login as root and /etc/init.d/xdm stop to close the local session and kill the server.
  • ctrl-alt-F3 and login as myself.
  • $ X -query remoteVBserver -port whackynot177
This isn't terribly convenient and I wonder if lightdm would handle the switch more conveniently; that is, provide a menu to switch between the local login and the remote session. Once the remote session took over the display, getting back to lightdm would be a matter of getting kdm to relinquish control, in some way ... but that's another question.

The question now is: can lightdm provide the desired behaviour ?

Why do you want to close the local server in order to open the remote one? You should be able to run both and switch between both of them simultaneously. For this, login into Ctrl-alt-F2 and then give your command and append vt8 at the end, like so:
Code:
X -query remoteVBserver -port <port> vt8
I can't test it but it should work. Then you can switch between your local session and the remote session by Ctrl-alt-F7 and Ctrl-alt-F8.

I thought xdmcp will use the memory of the remote server, not the local one. Anyway, I haven't run xdmcp in over a decade, so I am probably wrong.
