Hi.

I have a new laptop. An MSI GT70-ONDUS.

It has an i7 processor with graphics on board, and an nvidia gtx675M. I have been fighting with this thing for days now trying to get bumblebee to work.

I have been following documents at places like here, here and here.

I think my first hurdle here is that my nvida card does not like to show up. None of the nvidia-drivers packages in portage seem to work, and I even tried downloading the driver directly from nvidia, and that didn't work either.

I get all manner of messages like the following in my /var/log/messages:

Code:
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799219] nvidia 0000:01:00.0: power state changed by ACPI to D0
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799237] vgaarb: device changed decodes: PCI:0000:01:00.0,olddecodes=none,decodes=none:owns=none
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799318] NVRM: The NVIDIA GPU 0000:01:00.0 (PCI ID: 10de:1212)
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799318] NVRM: installed in this system is not supported by the 319.17
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799318] NVRM: NVIDIA Linux driver release.  Please see 'Appendix
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799318] NVRM: A - Supported NVIDIA GPU Products' in this release's
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799318] NVRM: README, available on the Linux driver download page
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799318] NVRM: at www.nvidia.com.
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799330] nvidia: probe of 0000:01:00.0 failed with error -1
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799356] NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine failed for 1 device(s).
May  5 13:07:39 chrisMSILT-lin kernel: [   29.799358] NVRM: None of the NVIDIA graphics adapters were initialized!

This particular snippet is using the nvidia drives not in portage -- the ones that nvidia claim support my card (3.19.17). I have tried 3.19.17 in portage and 313.30 (which is current stable in portage). The messages only get worse using the ones in portage -- espcially the 313.30. After deleting my /var/log/messages, install 313.30 and rebooting my system my /var/log/messages is up to 9MB in less than a minute! It has that many complaints.

This is my first dealings with optimus on linux... so I admit to not knowing what I'm doing here... but I don't even think I have gotten to the "Optimus" part of optimus yet...

An lspci shows my card:
Code:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF114M [GeForce GTX 675M] (rev a1

There is no /dev/nvidia or /dev/nvidiactl (or anything similar) on my system.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

G

slightly related:

make sure that your kernel includes the settings mentioned in following thread:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-958106-highlight-.html

unfortunately I haven't tried to use bumblebee and/or optimus on my laptop - so not much experience & knowledge on it yet

I was missing one of those options, but unfortunately, it didn't make any difference...

the support for your card is supposed to be there:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-295.59-driver

so: either way MSI did some changes to the board, etc. that it isn't recognized and/or working with the official driver

or nvidia forgot to add your card's ID

or some other issue

anyways:

you can try asking at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 , the nvidia-devs surely know what might be the issue

also: don't forget to use >=3.9 kernel, xrandr 1.4, and maybe some other up-to-date bits (according to http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Baustelle/Nvidia_319.12/Optimus) it's needed

The new nvidia forum is https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/board/98/linux/ which is run by nvidia directly.

thanks for posting !

didn't know of that yet

they surely should be able to tell why it isn't recognized or working
