Loss making arm, no point holding on to it. Also it's small servers and stuff which people put together themselves anyway or buy stuff like rack servers from cheaper vendors. And small shops like those probably don't buy IBM's expensive consulting either. Seems like a good decision unless you want to hang on to the Juche Buy American stuff.

They are not selling off the POWER stuff, but no way is that going to do well in the small shop market. Their main business would remain big iron and consulting.

lol

I've not encountered an enterprise which relied on jerry-rigged hardware.

They're already doing it. Hence why IBM is running losses on this business. The jerry-rigged stuff works well enough to not splurge money on IBM's overpriced stuff.

I'm not familiar with the expression Jerry Rigged but an "enterprise" server is no different from a PC on a different form factor. Doesn't justify paying premium for them anyway.

rack server is not an enterprise server, it's just a rack server.

it's not just linux enterprise, it's all hardware services. the only companies with any server tech still onsite are the ones who bought it when amazon, rackspace, and all the rest of the cloud server tech was shit/nonexistent.

At a minimum, they are a tested platform with support for a period of time of years, usually more than 10, though that may be shrinking. Large corporations and enterprises usually opt for these solutions.
