For those who don't know, Northern California and Southern Oregon almost split from their respective states to form Jefferson State. At one point, the freeway was even blocked off and barricaded by guys with guns. Then four days later, Pearl Harbor happened and they decided, "Hell with it..."

Given the recent incompetence of the Democratic Party in California, I believe this move needs to be looked at again. Although I think guns won't be necessary this time around.

In principle I would support it, but it is clearly unconstitutional. Plus, I would still be living in Oregon, with the Jefferson border about three miles away from my house. NotQuiteSane lists his location as Klamath Falls, Jefferson.

wsw, are you in Northern Cali?

Why not take a step further and create a new nation rather than the 51st state.

I've been thinking about this again, and it really seems like things need to be set in motion.

1. Begin petitioning signers for a California ballot measure that, if passed, would require the California legislature to vote on whether to allow the selected counties to secede from California.
2. Begin negotiations with various state legislatures as to what the Jefferson counties would continue to provide in terms of water and other resources, in return for a favorable vote.
3. Begin lobbying Congress at the federal level for a favorable vote.

Something similar is going to need to be done on the Oregon side, but I don't know what their process is. Ultimately, no counties may branch off and form their own state unless the existing state legislatures agree, along with the U.S. Congress.

Honestly, you're probably better off trying to work with an existing larger movement such as the Free State Project (get involved / FAQ).

I check on them periodically, and it seems their growth has slowed. If they ever reach their goal of 20k, I'd ping them for a job and consider moving.

Seeing as how that's mainly San Francisco's and LA's debt, I don't think that will be a problem.
