This appears to be sys-devel/gcc-4.8.0 Failed to install: .info No such file or directory, which is affecting several versions of gcc, despite the title. The problem seems to have been introduced during attempts to fix sys-devel/gcc: should not regenerate info pages (most versions fail with texinfo-5.x).

There was a regression introduced in the toolchain.eclass. It is fixed again, so re-sync and re-emerge.

Thank you, yest this was the case.
I know I wasn't effected by texinfo-5.x as I use 4.x
