I keep getting multiple packages for zlib. I'm trying to emerge cryptsetup in this instance but it happens to any package wanting zlib to be installed. Very stuck any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Code:
sudo emerge cryptsetup

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

sys-libs/zlib:0

  (sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5.1-r2::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    >=sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5.1-r2:0[minizip] required by (dev-db/virtuoso-server-6.1.4-r1::gentoo, installed)
    >=sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5.1-r2[minizip] required by (media-video/vlc-2.0.3::gentoo, installed)
    sys-libs/zlib[minizip] required by (games-emulation/visualboyadvance-1.7.2-r3::gentoo, installed)

  (sys-libs/zlib-1.2.7::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    >=sys-libs/zlib-1.2.6 required by (sys-apps/kmod-12-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

You have quite a few unread news items. You should consider reading those.

Also it appears that you haven't updated world in quite some time. Not keeping a Gentoo system up to date can directly lead to issues like the ones you are experiencing now.

Try those and let us know.
