Hi all. I have a very interesting problem. I've been running kernel 3.6 just fine for some time now, and everything works okay. I switched to kernel 3.7.10, and this problem surfaced.

On boot, slim starts up, and I'm able to log into XFCE okay. I can start a firefox session, and close a firefox session. Everything runs smoothly until I try to start another firefox session. The mouse freezes up, the keyboard is unresponsize, and shortly after, the display becomes garbled. SSH is also down, and the only way out is to hold the power button.

The 3.6 kernel seems to work fine, which makes me think there's some sort of kernel option I'm missing but I don't have any clue what it could be.

I'm not sure which commands to run to help troubleshoot the problem. I'm using an NVidia GPU, with the nouveau driver.

Teegrins, emptysea2000!

That certainly seems peculiar, and while I can't tell anything obvious right away, here are some things I think I'd do myself in no particular order:
  • Check if the Firefox process did actually shut down properly, and didn't linger on (in which case, I don't think another instance of Firefox should fire up though I may remember wrong).
  • Look into the /var/log/messages for interesting entries.
  • Run Firefox from a terminal to see if there would be related output.
  • Make note of memory and other resource usage.
I could be ways off, but when I think of it, I feel as if something is messing up in the RAM, or something similar. Just has the sort of a feel to it, but that's really just an uneducated guess.

One question: is this www-client/firefox or www-client/firefox-bin, or both? My www-client/firefox actually started acting weirdly some time ago, best described as the interface being slow and/or sluggish. I'm pretty sure it's only the said application; I don't think I noticed it having a greater effect.

I tried the bin-version, and it does not seem to exhibit the same behaviour. I have not yet looked into it more at all, but in any case, I think it might be a good idea to post your

Code:
emerge --info firefox

or

Code:
emerge --info firefox-bin

or both.

I hope someone else can spot the issue better than I, but I hope this can be of some help, too!

Good luck~

1. Usually when firefox isn't done cleaning up, a dialog box will pop up saying another instance of firefox is still going. This never occurred, but I'll double check it to make sure this isn't the case.

2. I don't see anything relevent here.

3. I opened a terminal and tried to start firefox there.

Code:
firefox -vvv > firefox.log

Same issue, and when I rebooted the machine the log file was empty.

4. This is impossible, as everything just stops working. Before this occurs, memory and CPU usage seem sane.

Code:
emerge --info firefox

Before you start firefox, look if xfce has a session management in place to start it:
ps -A |grep firefox

Then try kill firefox! And try
firefox -safe-mode -ProfileManager
Look in a terminal at firefox -help for more.

Both causes the strange symptom to occur.

Surprisingly, firefox --help will output the help screen before locking up and garbling the display.

Might be a problem with the graphics card driver. Try running "export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1" and then run firefox from the same terminal and see if it still happens that way.

Could be a graphics card module issue.
Are you running FGLRX or Nvidia?

Post the output of dmesg.

Code:
dmesg

I'm using the nouveau driver in the kernel (NVidia).

Here's dmesg:

There is one more thing I noticed when trying to play around. Running glxinfo twice will trigger the freeze, too.

I disabled the graphics acceleration for the nouveau driver, and it seems the problem has gone away. Perhaps graphics acceleration for nouveau isn't supported after kernel 3.6.

When I proposed "-safe-mode"
I thought of deactivating glx-opengl features. But this -safe-mode option targets to deactivate extensions as I now remember.

You could either
- find the correct firefox configuration parameter to deactivate glx
- deactivate all glx, webgl, opengl of your system
- install the proprietary nvidia driver

[edit as I see your last post] nouveau has limited support of 3d features (Phoronix website shows many games working well). Not enough or problematic for some applications, as you experienced just now. But with nouveau getting better step by step you could try a newer unstable kernel?

[edit2]Menu-Edit-Preferences-Advanded-Generel
x Use-Hardware-Acceleration
deactivate!

Ahh excellent. The 3D effects aren't essential to this PC, so I'm satisfied. I'm marking this solved. Thanks for the help, everyone!
