Just recently I added an outside overlay - bgo-overlay. Adding using layman command works successfully. However, when I run eix-update, every time process gets stuck as shown below.

Code:

upengan78 ...

The issue is that ... and I'm sure mv will correct me if I'm wrong ... eix is parsing the metadata and one or other ebuild from the b.g.o overlay is using a nolonger existant, and so obsolete, *.eclass. As the eclass is 'kde-functions.eclass' I assume this is due to the changes to kde recently.

The deeper issue is that b.g.o isn't really an overlay with a maintainer, but autogenerated from whatever ebuilds are added to b.g.o .... so its no doubt more prone to issues of this kind. Your probably best not to use it via layman, but sync to some other part of the filesystem, and filter any ebuild you want to use in PORTDIR_OVERLAY.

best ... khay

The problem is that apparently there is no metadata, so eix is trying to execute the ebuilds to generate them. This in turn fails due to the missing eclass.
It is likely that all these ebuiilds will not emerge.
To generate a vaild metadata you can force eix to only use cache method "parse" (instead of parse|ebuild - please consult the manpage how to do that, I am currently too tired): Then some data (like e.g. slot name) will be missing for these ebuilds, but at least you can see them in eix. (OTOH, I suspect that also the parse|ebuild will finish eventually and probably then contains even more accurate information despite the error messages during creation).

Ok. Thanks.

Tried the option to just use parse cache (for overlays)

Code:
OVERLAY_CACHE_METHOD="parse" eix-sync
 * Copying old database to /var/cache/eix/previous.eix
 * Running emerge --sync

I cannot reproduce that here: I just added gpo-overlay and realized that it even has md5 metadata, so OVERLAY_CACHE_METHOD=metadata-md5 works. Due to your (default) setting of CACHE_METHOD_PARSE, eix should be attempting this method before trying to actually parse/execute something else. However, even
Code:
CACHE_METHOD_PARSE= OVERLAY_CACHE_METHOD=parse eix-update
which forces to use cache method parse, does not hang here. Maybe you have some rubbish in /var/cache/edb/dep: Please remove/rename that directory before retrying.
Another possibility is that you have a filesystem/disk problem: Does
Code:
cat /var/lib/layman/bgo-overlay/metadata/md5-cache/*/* >/dev/null
exit quickly?
Edit: Are you using >=eix-0.23.2?

It is strange that I cannot reproduce it. Maybe it is related with locales: Does LC_ALL=C fix the problem? (BTW: Did the workaround OVERLAY_CACHE_METHOD=metadata-md5 help at least as an intermediate solution?)
Please also use eix-update -v (with OVERLAY_CACHE_METHOD=parse) to find out which ebuild causes the problems (not necessary to post the whole output, just the last lines).

Yes, but it is only a hack which just ignores all ebuilds which are not contained already in metadata. It would be much better if eix could be fixed.
I suppose the offending ebuild in your case is elasticsearch-bin-0.20.3.ebuild, but I cannot see anything for which I can imagine eix could become confused: debugging shows here that everything works as it should for parsing this ebuild. Did setting LC_ALL=C help in some way? Does it help if you manually add a trailing newline to that ebuild? Or maybe this ebuild contains obviously broken data on your system?
BTW: you did not reply whether you are using >=eix-0.28.2 or some older version; some bugs concerning parsing had been fixed meanwhile, especially concerning missing newlines at end of file...

Actually I did reply about eix version installed.

Here it is again.
eix -I -c eix
Code:
[I] app-portage/eix (0.25.5@02/20/2013): Search and query ebuilds, portage incl. local settings, ext. overlays, version changes, and more

LC_ALL=C didn't really help. OVERLAY_CACHE_METHOD=metadata-md5 eix-update worked fine even without LC_ALL=C setting.

If I attempt to emerge eleasticsearch-bin, i get :
emerge elasticsearch-bin
Code:

This has to do with line endings, you will want to use a tool like dos2unix to get rid of the \r.

wow, that was a quick fix to that issue. dos2unix helped. Now I see,

emerge elasticsearch-bin

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge

Glad that 'corruption' word has now vanished.

I don't see that particular version available here.

eix eix
Code:
[I] app-portage/eix
     Available versions:  0.23.10 0.25.5 ~0.27.4 ~0.27.6 ~0.28.2 {{clang debug +dep doc

What I have done temporarily is,
Code:
cd /var/lib/layman/bgo-overlay ; find . -type f | xargs -I{} dos2unix {}

After that the eix-update finished without getting stuck using eix-update. I ran it with -v and output is at http://bpaste.net/show/86979/

If you suggest, it's still better to update eix to a higher version, which version one do you recommend?

Thank you all for your help to overcome this issue.

All later versions will have the bugfix as well, of course.

There is a problem with modifying overlays fetched by layman: Depending on the VCS used and the changes made "upstream", it may be that your next layman -S does not update the files you changed or overrides your changes or even stops with an error.
Quote:

With a more current version, you do not need to modify the files (at least, concerning eix).
Quote:

I think the most current version should be quite stable: No bugreports for quite a while. (Except for color issues for which there is no satisfactory solution; see the BUGS section if you have problems with it). eix-0.28.3 which should be in the tree soon contains even more bugfixes and, moreover, has support for bgo.zugaina.org in eix-remote.

Hi,

I had a similar problem and I just wanted to share my solution. As it was mentioned before, the problem here is that eix is parsing the metadata of an ebuild from an overlay but there's some missing eclass in its dependecies.

In my case the overlay with problems was /var/lib/layman/krontage. So what I just tried (and worked for me) was to update the overlay's package tree with the following command:

Code:
# layman -s krontage

After that the eix-update command worked without having to force any cache method on eix.

PD: I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm spanish and my english sucks :P.

I've got a similar problem with bgo-overlay, except the fact not only eix-update fails (with eix 0.29.3), but also

Well, bgo-overlay is not a maintained overlay but just created automatically from bug submissions (I do not know details of that script, but it is enough reason to not trust this overlay anyway and copy only manually the ebuilds which you want into your local overlay). In particular, the ebuilds are never updated. In this case, some ebuild is using fortran.eclass which has been obsoleted by the fortran-2.eclass long ago. The ebuild just is no longer valid.

mv, thank you for the hint! I've got rid of bgo-overlay and installed the needed packages with manually downloaded ebuilds. It works :)
