I have been trying to get my usb Epson Stylus Photo RX560 to work on a brand new ~arch install for days.
Both the box and the printer work in an older install w/o problem.
This install had CUPS-1.6.1.
When you click "Add Printer" it gives you several choices, most of them internet, none usb, nearest that I thought left was "LPD/LPR Host or Printer".
So that's what I used and chose " socket://hostname:9100".
All went well,I could set it for CUPS+Gutenprint ok.
To make a long story shorter:it wouldn't print.

Click "Find new printers" and it says "no printers found" with the printer connected and powered.
But that is exactly what you have to do:
When you next click "Add Printer" lo and behold there it is "USB Epson etc"
After that it was a breeze to install it correctly and it prints!!

The Gentoo printing guide needs updating I think.
Cups should be emerged with the usb USE flag set!

I am writing this so it may benefit others.
Gerard.

i had to use epsons driver for the workforce 635 all in one. it was set to network print rather than usb, but usb also required the driver.

My printer apparently is too old.
It turns up 0.
Besides I used it with the original driver in WinXP but results where inferior to Linux+Cups+Gutenprint.
Installing stuff outside of portage I avoid as much as possible.
Gerard.
Edit:Just checked but Gutenprint does hav a driver for workforce 635.
