I am trying to play avi, flv files with mplayer. I can hear the sound but without video. They used to work fine but in the last days it stopped playing and due to this error:

Code:
X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)

The films play well with vlc.

I managed to to find a workaround for this, by running it
Code:
mplayer -vo x11 file.avi
or change in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf to x11 or gl.

However, I encounter another problem. When I play the file, I can't stop it with control c or by pressing the X in the corner of the player. It complains about:
Code:

A:   2.4 V:   2.4 A-V: -0.000 ct:  0.034   0/  0  2%  2%  0.5% 0 0
No bind found for key 'CTRL-c'.
A:   4.8 V:   4.8 A-V:  0.001 ct:  0.034   0/  0  2%  1%  0.5% 0 0
No bind found for key 'CTRL-CLOSE_WIN'.

The only way out of this situation is
Code:
killall mplayer

I would like a better and permanent solution. I understand it might be due to memory or X11 drm/dri problem. The laptop has 8GB memory.

Indeed if I change to x11 in video mode it works. If I try -vo gl, X crashes.

I have this problem too, both the BadAlloc and X crashing (once) when doing "-vo gl" (other times "-vo gl" just made the video lag bad).

The problem appears when running kernel linux-3.8.13-gentoo. It goes away when downgrading to kernel 3.7.10-gentoo. Possibly there's some kernel configuration directive I should change, or it could be a problem with the kernel code...

I just wanted to add that the issue is also solved by upgrading x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel to the masked version 2.21.11
