I've gotten in to a strange situation with icu and boost that has me stumped. I upgraded boost a while back because libreoffice-4.x.x needed it. Today, I was trying to rebuild qtcore and picked up a slot conflict between icu and boost. I noticed some strange RDEPENDS on icu in the boost-1.51.0 and seem to be a superficial cause. Not sure what the root cause is. I downgraded the latest 2.2 version of portage, thinking this might be the issue, but it made no difference. Anybody able to decipher this?

Code:

emerge -pv dev-libs/boost

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies         ... done!
[ebuild  rR   ~] dev-libs/icu-50.1.2:0/50.1 [50.1.2:0/50.1.2] USE="doc -debug -examples -static-libs" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ~] dev-libs/boost-1.52.0-r6:0/1.52  USE="doc icu nls python threads tools -debug -mpi -static-libs" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 python3_1 python3_2 -python2_5 -python2_6 (-python3_3)" 0 kB

Total: 2 packages (2 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

dev-libs/icu:0

  (dev-libs/icu-50.1.2::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    >=dev-libs/icu-49:0/50.1.2= required by (dev-qt/qtcore-4.8.4-r2::gentoo, installed)
    dev-libs/icu:0/50.1.2= required by (dev-libs/libxml2-2.9.0-r2::gentoo, installed)
    dev-libs/icu:0/50.1.2= required by (app-text/libmspub-0.0.4::gentoo, installed)
    dev-libs/icu:0/50.1.2= required by (media-libs/libcdr-0.0.11::gentoo, installed)
    dev-libs/icu:0/50.1.2= required by (media-libs/harfbuzz-0.9.12::gentoo, installed)
    dev-libs/icu:0/50.1.2= required by (dev-db/sqlite-3.7.15.2::gentoo, installed)

  (dev-libs/icu-50.1.2::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    (no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Hrmmm, seems it may all be related to this icu subslot business:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455900

Portage bug perhaps?

It looks like the sub-slot changed from 50.1 to 50.1.2 without a revision bump. That's supposed to be handled in portage-2.2.0_alpha163 by the following commit:

http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=proj/portage.git;a=commit;h=875e3bd72f8bcdc5e4a19ee4ba98f4267195ef0e

Please try again with the latest version of portage, which is now 2.2.0_alpha166. If that doesn't solve it, then please file a bug at https://bugs.gentoo.org, and attach a debug log created as follows:

Code:
emerge -pv dev-libs/boost --debug > debug.log 2>&1
xz -9 debug.log

Thanks for the response Zac. I tried with 166 as well with the same results. I've opened a bug report:
