So "The xf86-video-intel module is an open-source 2D graphics driver for the X Window System as implemented by X.org." (according to http://www.x.org/wiki/Documentation). Will that run gnome 3 or will I need a different one?

xf86-video-intel by itself won't. That documentation is quite correct, it's the 2D driver. But Gnome 3 requires a 3D driver, which you get that one by emerging mesa with VIDEO_CARDS="intel" in /etc/make.conf. It's the combination of both xf86-video-intel and mesa that will make Gnome 3 work. |
