Hello,
why is that that both browsers eat so much cpu power even when idling? On windows 7 they "eat" no more than 3-4%... on laptop! Is it normal behavior? What is more...
at a time:
X = 10%
kwin = 10%
firefox = 16%
...what's happening?! It's certainly not normal. |

Are you using flash?
If you go to your chrome menu and open the 'View background pages' window, it will show you exactly what each chrome process is using. When I open mine, it's always flash that is the big CPU hog. |

Didn't help. What I cannot understand is why it's totally okay on my laptop's gentoo installation... any possibility of misconfiguration?

You could try to disable all the add-ons and see if that helps.

To do your test, ensure that only an empty page is displayed.
Because even displaying a forum page can consume several percent only to play animated icons. Idem with some background javascript.
As a mater of fact, if X is consuming CPU, it's because their is some visual activities ... |

Disabling everything didn't help. Also displaying same page on the laptop (windows 7) and here with same browser version (binary) proves windows version to be much less resource consuming (1-5%).
X goes up to 25% even when no browser is opened... i start to think it's more about general system configuration. Any clues? Don't make me think about installing windows  Gentoo's so perfect... help me out please! I've read that someone had problems with X and everything works just fine after he reinstalled the system... I would do that too (even if it's SO time consuming) but I have no guarantee it would work (most likely it's some kernel misconfiguration?) |

What is X load after a fresh logon (without anything launched).
What is your desktop environment ? any widget ?
FYI, I installed LXDE on my own PCs : X is consuming about 1 or 2% ... and it's only due to conky + some LUA goodies which is running on background to display systems figures, updated also every minutes. Conky process consume as well 2%. |

I have old netbooks that don't even use that kind of CPU on those processes. Not unless there is some flash animations or something similar running.
What kind of video device is your computer using? You might check some settings with eselect to make sure everything is set right. (opengl and mesa settings mainly)
If everything looks right there, I would think a missing kernel setting of some kind would be the culprit. |

go to System Settings -> Applications and System Notifications -> Player Settings
and select "No audio output".
This should help. Get powertop and see where kernel spends its jiffies |
