I've been working tirelessly searching and working on this to get X up and running on this machine with an ATI 7870 GPU. I've followed everyting I could and dug around everything I know to do, but hopefully a fresh look on the situation by someone else will help out.

Here is my startx output:

From the log file:
Code:

(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)

Do you have ACPI support compiled into your kernel?

must probably that this is not related to his issue.

@OP,
please post the outputs of the following:
Code:
emerge -ptv xorg-server ati-drivers
emerge --info
lsmod
eselect opengl list

Is the user you're running startx with in the video group?

Please confirm you followed the The X Server Configuration HOWTO.

What is the output of:
Code:
grep -i acpi /usr/src/linux-3.6.11-gentoo/.config

What is the result of:
Code:
rc-update show

Is acpid showing as mentioned to do in the elog output?

Finally, everything else considered, you may want to look at the bug report I was forced to file on the latest 12.11_beta11 on the ati-drivers as we appear to have some similar hardware.

Hey. I thought I would bump this since I have a similar issue and am using the fglrx module.

I can switch between consoles (or are they shells?) using F# but it is very delayed and takes a few minutes for the switch to occur.

If I delete the xorg.conf gnome3.6 starts fine but is in fallback mode (obviously). I saw a console print stating something was "spawning too quickly" so perhaps that is where the delay of the F# switching is coming from.

Edit - Found this http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=80708

Not sure if I needed this patch or not. What I did was unmask x11-drivers/ati-drivers. I ended up with x11 1.13.1 and catalyst 13.3 beta 2. This combination worked for me

you configuration and log of xorg for basic configuration is okay.
You also can start it with /etc/init.d/xdm start that can run gdm or kdm or something for xfce, so on...
or use basic xorg wirdowses with watch and xterm.
