btalcox0715,
rf-kill is either a hardware switch on you PC that controls the WiFi transmitter to save power, or a key combination that needs needs kernel and userspace support or a software key that works like the key combination. In any event, your wireless transmitter is powered off.
Add rf-kill support to your kernel and emerge rfkill for the user space tools, unless you have a hardware switch, in which case, just operate the switch. _________________ Regards,

Okay well now I can't even emerge anything. I have internet in arch and everything. Doing everything the same as always, and keeps failing to emerge due to network problems. |

Well hoping after I reboot emerge will work again, who knows. Recompiling the kernel now. I have rfkill support enabled as well as cfg80211 powersave by default disabled. |

Well, still can't get this working. Even with rfkill (which I had to download manually and make install because emerge isn't working through chroot environment even though I have internet in Arch).
But I took 7 pictures (because I don't have any way of uploading the outputs yet) of lsusb, lsmod, dmesg, my config files, iwconfig, ifconfig etc etc.

EDIT: the first picture is weird, you have to hit view full resolution to view it. And the pictures are sideways thanks to imgur |

btalcox0715,
I can see lots of pain with that pre shared key.
With the quotes around it, it will be treated as a string of characters by Gentoo.
Without the quotes, it will be a number. The two are not the same and its important. It may cause your authentication to fail.
Can you test with no encryption? _________________ Regards,

I really like neddy's thought.
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Documentation/iw/vif/ is the closest I can find to a fit for the phy0 manifestation, do xen-sources, hostapd, air-crack, air-mon or the like have any relation to your system? any other virtual stuff?
boot arch, mount gentoo partitions, and post the content of /mnt/gentoo//usr/src/linux/.config at a pastebin site, please. If your arch has wgetpaste; Code: | wgetpaste /mnt/gentoo//usr/src/linux/.config | should do it, else, use browser and copy and paste. Really curious about you having phy0 lines when I don't.
Code: | grep -i parallel /etc/rc.conf |
want to see:
rc_parallel="NO"
not: rc_parallel="YES" or #rc_parallel="NO" or no rc_parallel= entry at all. Trying to parallel tends to screw up timing for wireless. _________________ Defund the FCC. |

I also tried removing the quotes and removing encryption, but all I got was errors reading the wpa_supplicant.conf file when executing /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 |

Your .config gets interesting at line 3: Quote: | # Linux/x86 3.6.11-gentoo Kernel Configuration | should be Quote: | # Linux/x86_64 3.6.11-gentoo Kernel Configuration | to be consistent with the rest of the file. It suggests a default 32 bit configuration was loaded and edited toward 64 bit.
To explore: boot gentoo then: if working Code: | emerge --info > /emergeinfo | reboot to arch, mount the gentoo partitions, post /mnt/gentoo/emergeinfo and /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/make.conf here or at pastebin. e Code: | eselect profile list | grep -i "*" | output? _________________ Defund the FCC. |

make model of motherboard?
plan to build a stripped down kernel for you since I can't see a real problem. Will be using an fx8150/fx990 cpu/chipset so should be very close

Assuming chroot is unavailable
boot arch, mount the gentoo partitions, Code: | wget -O /mnt/gentoo/usr/src/linux/newconfig http://bpaste.net/raw/77143/ | to download new kernel config. reboot to gentoo. Code: | cd /usr/src/linux
mv .config oldconfig
make clean
make mrproper
mv newconfig .config
make menuconfig | look around, change something change it back, exit saving the configuration Code: | mount /boot
make && make modules_install && make install | last part, make install, is optional it will name the kernel in /boot vmlinuz-3.6.11-gentoo. manual kernel copy to /boot Code: | cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/your kernel name | is fine. As old kernel mostly works save it and have new kernel name be different. make sure kernel name in grub.conf is exact duplicate of the name in /boot. reboot gentoo. _________________ Defund the FCC. |

it has had a lot of stuff removed. It started with an x86_64 template. It started from a kernel-seed. It is almost exactly the config that works for me on a very close set of equipment to yours. If your wireless still does not connect ... _________________ Defund the FCC. |

Well dmesg doesn't show the phy0 lines anymore. It seems the psk handshake keeps failing. Which is odd because I connect to the exact same network with the same adapter on Mint and Arch. Could you run me through a standard "procedure" for testing the network. There are so many commands I get confused. I generally end up using /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 (re)start, ifconfig wlan0 up, rfkill unblock all, iwconfig, wpa_supplicant -Dnl80211 -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf etc. But I'm not sure what order to use them in. I also get an error sometimes saying ctrl_interface already running or something. |

Code: | /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 restart | should be the winner. This allows the gentoo script to sequence the process.
ctrl-interface already running means wpa_supplicant has started early or been left running.
uncommenting 'rc_logger="YES"' in /etc/rc.conf might provide additional info at /var/log/rc.log.
what does dmesg now say? _________________ Defund the FCC. |

I don't have a net.wlan0 when debugging; the wlan0 device is generated by the kernel driver,
and I then run (as root) "wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf"
which gets me a connection. Since that command doesn't return while the connection remains
active, I run "dhclient wlan0" in another window to get an address for the wlan0 interface.
After a bit of messing around with wpa_supplicant.conf that usually works.
wpa_supplicant contains something like:
Code: |
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
ap_scan=1
network={
ssid="XXXX"
psk="YYYY"
priority=5
}
|
nm's kind of a nightmare to configure; it's supposed to be automatic, and when it works
(as it does on another machine) it's fine. But I've never managed to find all its configuration
files ...

It has to do with the password I think. The 4 way handshake fails. Not really sure where to go from here. |

Yep. I'm not at the box right now and won't be until tomorrow. Emerge works and chroot. Think it was an error I made when mounting etc. etc. What do you suggest? |
