I've installed with no problems xorg-server package. Then installed twm and xterm to test if Xorg would work, but not worked. Tried to modprobe radeon and modprobe fglrx before startx and doesn't work.

OK, your problem is you can't have both open and closed source drivers installed as they conflict. You must select one or the other. Directions for radeon and fglrx can be found on the wiki. Note they require mutually exclusive kernel options to be set.

Ok, I'm recompiling my kernel right now. Should I reinstall radeon and xorg-server after that? Or just a X -configure will be ok?

X -configure is dead. It should not be used anymore. You should not need any configuration with radeon. It should just work. Once your kernel is set up, there should be no need to recompile anything either. Just get rid of the fglrx.

Oh man, maybe this is the problem:
Code:
[    33.188] (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
[    33.188] (EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.
[    33.188] (II) UnloadModule: "radeon"
[    33.188] (EE) Device(s) detected, but none match those in the config file.

In the link you posted http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Radeon#Kernels_.3E.3D3.0.0 says that error can be solved by recompiling the kernel with framebuffer as module (mine is built-in... :P )

I'll try to recompile again with correct kernel config and reply here

In the link you posted http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Radeon#Kernels_.3E.3D3.0.0 says that error can be solved by recompiling the kernel with framebuffer as module (mine is built-in... :P )

I'll try to recompile again with correct kernel config and reply here

It didn't worked. The X.0.log is the same, so the problema may be other.

Now, I'll try what BillWho suggests and post the results here

Again... this f*&$3 error! :(

Hey guys, I have a Lenovo G475 (brazilian) and found it in the wiki http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Lenovo_ThinkPad_x120e#E-350_Processor_Details
It's another notebook from Lenovo, but both G475 and x120e have e-350 processor which I think come with HD 6310M (Zacate APU). I'll try to follow kernel configs described in that wiki. What do you think?

rudregues,

Double check :

CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=m
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y

Did you unmerge x11-drivers/ati-drivers :?:

Yes, these config are set. I've unmerged ati-drivers too.
Another compilation has finished right now and I get the same error. If I recompile xorg-server, now that's kernel is correctly configured, doesn't work?
Well, it's quite hard to know where the problem is.

You can't miss with this configuration outline :D

I'm reading again your link. There is one thing I have missed:
Quote:
3) If you changed your /etc/make.conf make sure you resync portage and do an update of your world

But there is a problem. I cannot find "resync" option in portage. I think the most appropriate would be "emerge --sync", but not sure. And to update my world, just enter "emerge --update @world" in console? Which command of the two comes first?

rudregues,

I suspect you are not using the kernel you think your are.
Run
Code:
$ uname -a
Linux NeddySeagoon 3.7.1-gentoo #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Dec 26 16:00:43 GMT 2012 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

The date and time Wed Dec 26 16:00:43 GMT 2012 is the build date an time of the running kernel.
The #1 is the number of times that this kernel has been built.

If you are running the kernel you have just compiled uname -a will show a time, at most, a few hours ago.
If its wrong, your kernel is not being installed correctly - did your remember to mount /boot ?

rudregues,

First check what NeddySeagoon suggested.

To answer your question emerge --sync is what the instructions alluded to for a "resync" or if you installed eix then eix-sync.

To update world you should do emerge -uavDN @world

Hi Neddy. Normally I use Sabayon and enter in Gentoo environment with this script:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
mount /dev/sda6 /mnt/gentoo
cd /mnt/gentoo
mount -t proc none ./proc/
mount --rbind /dev/ dev/
echo
echo "Execute this:"
echo "env-update"
echo "source /etc/profile"
chroot .
umount /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo

And execute
Code:
$ env-update
$ source /etc/profile

I've used this script to install gentoo base system and to configure something. So, I compile the kernel and reboot to select gentoo partition and test xorg with startx. If I do "uname -a" in that booted partition it returns the last date I compiled a kernel

rudregues,

That sounds good.

Please put your Gentoo kernel .config on a pastebin site and post your lspci output and your emerge --info output.
Your most recent /var/log/Xorg.0.log would be good too, so we have a complete set of self consistent data to work with.

If there are problems I also would try a real session manager.
As upstream udev maintainers announced some time ago they will not support startx any more :(

ulenrich,

When that day comes, its time to drop udev. startx works fine here with sys-fs/udev-197-r6

I just installed twm and xterm accordingly to the manual to run startx and properly see if xorg works.

Neddy, I'll wait for the update @world then I post these commands.
Xorg-server has taken up to 2h40min last time to compile. If I had a core i7...

rudregues,

One thing I noticed right off-the-bat is no support for X - meaning you probably failed to set your profile.

Code:
laptop plugins # eselect profile list
Available profile symlink targets:
  [1]   default/linux/amd64/10.0
  [2]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/selinux
  [3]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop
  [4]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/gnome
  [5]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/kde
  [6]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/developer
  [7]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/no-multilib
  [8]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/server
  [9]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/x32
  [10]  default/linux/amd64/13.0
  [11]  default/linux/amd64/13.0/selinux
  [12]  default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop *
  [13]  default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/gnome
  [14]  default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde
  [15]  default/linux/amd64/13.0/developer
  [16]  default/linux/amd64/13.0/no-multilib
  [17]  default/linux/amd64/13.0/x32
  [18]  hardened/linux/amd64
  [19]  hardened/linux/amd64/selinux
  [20]  hardened/linux/amd64/no-multilib
  [21]  hardened/linux/amd64/no-multilib/selinux
  [22]  hardened/linux/uclibc/amd64

At a minimum, set it to desktop with eselect profile set 12 if 12 is the same as mine.

You will then need to emerge -uavDN @world

Hum.... ok Bill, after merging world again I'll update pastebin files.
But what is the difference between these two profiles I quoted from you? My plan is to install Fluxbox later. I tried to find that file with find / -name 13.0 | grep "default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop" but found nothing.

Select a profile with "desktop" in the name is a pre-requiste for X? I'm asking it because I was reading again the docs about x-server and it really doesn't talk about select a profile.
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
Maybe the document is outdated or a "doc-bug"?

Like x-server doc, the Fluxbox doc doens't abord profile selections too... http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/fluxbox-config.xml

Or maybe the reason is many people put "X" in USE flag, so there is no need to select profile with desktop?

rudregues,

Code:
cat /usr/portage/profiles/targets/desktop/make.defaults

cat /usr/portage/profiles/targets/desktop/gnome/make.defaults

You'll see USE flag settings including 'X'. For gnome those are added on to the contents of desktop.

Take a look at readlink /etc/portage/make.profile. The look at the file parent.

The profile setting is covered in the handbook, but I forget what chapter :(

UPDATE: chapter 6 Choosing the Right Profile

Bill, yes the handbook talks about profile selection
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=6
The problem is the hand book doesn't say "if you don't choose some *desktop* profile you will have problem in installing and running X11. Someone who will install kde or gnome will see */desktop/kde or */desktop/gnome and will choose. But a n00b who wants fluxbox or openbox will can see no difference between amd64/10.0 and amd64/10.0/desktop and select first one, just like me

I think a little note would care it.

Well, let's go compile world! 8)
