Hello guys I'd like to install Mate Cinnamon and XFCE. I currently use XFCE but I'd like to try the other two since I'm quite curious :-P

So I tried to do a classic emerge mate / cinnamon (for MATE I've added the mate-overlay first) but when I try to emerge cinnamon I've got this:
Code:
emerge cinnamon
Calculating dependencies... done!

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
#required by cinnamon (argument)
=gnome-extra/cinnamon-1.6.7-r1 ~amd64

Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring CONFIG_PROTECT).

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy ">=net-misc/networkmanager-0.8.999[introspection]" has unmet requirements.
- net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.6.4::gentoo USE="bluetooth dhcpcd gnutls introspection (multilib) nss ppp wext -avahi -connection-sharing -dhclient -doc -modemmanager -resolvconf -systemd -vala -wimax"

The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
    exactly-one-of ( nss gnutls )

The above constraints are a subset of the following complete expression:
    modemmanager? ( ppp ) exactly-one-of ( nss gnutls ) exactly-one-of ( dhclient dhcpcd )

(dependency required by "gnome-extra/cinnamon-1.6.7-r1[networkmanager]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "cinnamon" [argument])

Why can I have either nss or gnutls?

I think that you can have both, but what emerge says is that you may put as an USE flag at least one of those, no?

Ahhh so I can maintain them both BUT I have to compile them with one of those two options... right?

EDIT: Solved with USE="nss -gnutls" emerge cinnamon but... I get blocked packages.
Code:
USE="nss -gnutls" emerge --autounmask-write cinnamon
Calculating dependencies... done!

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

You could continue to emerge both Mate and Cinnamon and maintain the overlays as necessary. However resolving the slot conflicts might be difficult seeing that both Mate and Cinnamon are forks of completely different versions of Gnome. If you simply want to install them for testing purposes, you could install virtualbox and use it to install them and when your done simply remove them through virtualbox. Then you won't have to worry about the slot conflicts which would seem inevitable . Sorry I can't help you with the slot issue as the only machine I have for testing won't run Gnome3 without locking up the desktop every 5 minutes.

Linux Mint has all the options you are looking to test HERE. Just download the iso's and use virtualbox to run and install them.

I have installed for testing

Ubuntu-12.04 (Unity) I really dislike it. It seems to be designed more for a touch screen or a tablet, not a true desktop PC or Workstation.
Linux Mint (Mate) Has a nice look and feel much more like what I prefer to use.
Linux Mint (Xfce) Also a very nice look and feel. One I am seriously considering as a replacement for Gnome.
Linux Mint (Cinnamon) Much better than Gnome3 but it still has a lot of unnecessary crap and is difficult to work with.
Fedora18 (Default Gnome3) Looks nice, new and fresh but so far completely useless for my needs and purposes.

These are my personal opinions based on my likes, dislikes and computing needs. Everyone has their own opinions and should make their decisions based on what best meets their personal needs. Thats the Gentoo way right? :)
