PostPosted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 2:28 pm    Post subject: I have no sound at all Reply with quote

Hi,
I have been fighting desesperately for weeks trying to have sound working properly on my gentoo /kde install. At the time being things are even worse than what they were. To be clear, at first I could manage to have sound with audacity while not having it with amarok. After that, I got amarok working but not audacity.
Now, may be due to an upgrade of kernel I have anything working

My kernel is x86_64 3.6.11 and the sound config is like this :

Reading documentation, I have trouble making out what is wrong.

augustin2,

lets start at the beginning.

Post the output of lspci. If you have any USB sound devices, post the output of lsusb too.

As you are some way along the road to getting sound going, the output of
Code:
ls -l /dev/snd
may be useful too.

augustin2,

/dev/snd:
controlC0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D0p pcmC0D1c pcmC0D1p pcmC0D2c seq timer

Looks not too bad. Each device ending in c is a capture device, each device ending in p is a playback device. All devices are stereo.
You look a bit short of playback devices. Most systems are 5.1 or 7.1 and it doesn't look like you have a laptop.
This suggests that snd_hda_intel is not detecting your hardware properly and needs some help from a module parameter.

/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt gives a list of models.
All the files in that dir with names starting HD are worth reading.

The routine is
Code:
modprobe -r snd_hda_intel
modprobe  snd_hda_intel model=<some_model>

Test. Rinse and repeat until you find one you like.

You can get some hints by looking at your back panel sound connections. dmesg may help too.

Here is what I have on my alternate Ubuntu config (in dual boot) for which sound works perfectly. Seems that the modules are the same but for midi which is not enabled in my Gentoo.
Can I conclude that the module should work in Gentoo ?

augustin2,

Maybe. Your /dev/snd shows that the snd-hda-intel is detecting something but it may not be attempting to use the right codec chip.

What does Ubuntu show in /dev/snd ?

Ubuntu shows snd_hda_codec_realtek as loaded, however that are lots of realtek codecs and they can be configured in different ways.
Its possibly the modprobe trial and error.

Run alsamixer on both Ubunto and Gentoo - do they show the same codec ?
Is your sound unmuted in Gentoo?

Note: you must not unmute any digital outputs. That is, controls with SPDI/F or IEC in their names. That will stop analogue audio from working

when I launch alsamixer on gentoo I can see this:

In KMIX I have the following adjustments
Tab HDA Intel

Front max
Surround max
Center max
LFE Muted
Headphone Muted
IEC958 (with a little unchecked checkbox beside) capture
Muted
Line muted
PCM max

Then I have the PulseAudio control and I feel a bit confused about all this settings

At last I tried to update my config and it fails with this.
