Hi, guys, I hope you can help me with a weird problem I am having since a month ago, after an update.
Since then, my screen refresh is weird with some programs. For instance, if I open a konsole instance, sometimes the content inside konsole doesn't refresh until I move the window around. The same problem happens with almost every program if a konsole instance is opened. It is also weird the behaviour of the clock, which instead of updating every second, it updates every 2, 3, sometimes 4 seconds...

When any of those windows gets frozen, I can apply the same solution, if I move those windows around, the content refreshes. I tried to disable KDE effects, but the problem persists.

I tried to re-emerge xorg (emerge --emptytree xorg-x11) but it didn't solve the problem. I also tried to re-emerge the whole system (emerge --emptytree --deep world), buuuuuut problem persists.

I am using a gentoo 3.6.11 kernel, kde 4.9.5 and my computer is a dell xps 15 laptop with two graphics cards (maybe this is related to the problem): an intel HD3000 and a nvidia GTS-I-don't-remember-what (optimus is installed and running properly). If I run any of those programs with optimus (optirun program) the problem persists.

My grub configuration for this kernel is as follows:

Quote:

title Gentoo Linux 3.6.11-gentoo
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/linux-3.6.11-gentoo root=/dev/sda8 console=tty1 i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1

I don't have any xorg.conf file since I haven't needed it with this computer (only the xorg.nvidia.conf file, but this doesn't apply, since the problem happens with the KDE desktop, which runs with the intel card).

If you need to know any specific configuration for the kernel or for any other thing, just let me know, I'm a bit lost with this problem which has been freaking me out for a month now.

Thank you in advance for any help, guys.

Please post /var/log/portage/elog/summary.log (there might be something useful there)
also post /var/log/Xorg.0.log (there's also Xorg.1.log but check the date at the beginning of the file and post the most recent one)

If you can, also post /etc/portage/package.use (I would like to see if you use any especific flags for a package)

I'm starting to think that maybe it's not a graphics problem. I've been using the computer for two days with KDE effects disabled, and now the behaviour is a little different. Instead of freezing the content of some windows, the whole screen freezes and after a couple of seconds it works properly again, like if the screen could not access the processor for a couple of seconds. Maybe it's something related to the kernel. My kernel configuration is here (3.6.11-gentoo):

Thank you.

Thank you, rmzelnick. Almost done, but not finished yet. You were right with your advice, I disabled the old fb modules, installed the modesetting xorg driver and recompiled every xorg driver with emerge @x11-module-rebuild, and now the system is more fluent, but the problem still persists.

This is the new output for Xorg.0.log:

Now, the screen updates properly for 2 or 3 seconds, then freezes (everything but the mouse) for another 3 or 4...

Just in case it has something to do with the problem, I'm including the list of services as well:

Hi candamil,
I see that you don't have some services required even before installing KDE, but let me show you a few problems in the log and then we can move on to those services:

Quote:

[ 21.876] (II) LoadModule: "vesa"
[ 21.876] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module vesa
[ 21.876] (II) UnloadModule: "vesa"

[ 21.877] (EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 21.877] (II) LoadModule: "fbdev"
[ 21.878] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module fbdev
[ 21.878] (II) UnloadModule: "fbdev"
[ 21.878] (II) Unloading fbdev
[ 21.878] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

If fbdev and vesa are built-in just ignore those. Moving on check out KDE - Gentoo Wiki under the "services" section, make sure you have those services running.

Thanks for the hint, rmzelnick. I added the consolekit service (polkit and udisks can't be loaded as a typical service with rc-update) and added the udisk use (emerge --newuse didn't compile anything), but it seems that it does not improve anything yet.

I have also gone through the installation manual, the xorg manual and the kde manual, in case there are new stuff to be done since my last installation, a couple of years ago, but I didn't find anything that I haven't done yet.

I also created a new user to verify that it's not a KDE configuration problem, aaaand no, it's not. So time to keep searching. Thank you anyway, you are wasting a lot of time with this :P.

A new hint. I installed XFCE to check if it works properly, and it does, so it seems a KDE problem.

Hi, USTruck, thanks for your reply.

As I have said in my first post, optimus server is installed and running properly, so it seems that is not the problem. Actually, this is an old installation and this problem happens after an update, and only in KDE (XFCE runs properly as well), so I suppose it's related to a KDE update or to a KDE service update or configuration (maybe something related to python or QT?).

In other hand, I have fixed the evdev thing for INPUT_DEVICES. Thanks for the hint.

Hello,

What about
eselect qtgraphicssystem
eselect mesa
eselect opengl

The qtgraphicssystem use by default 'Raster', I don't know if this part can be handled differently by Intel and Nvidia drivers ....

Hi, USTruck. I have just tried to change those eselect values, but it seems that it doesn't solve the problem. It has to be somewhere else...

New information. For several reasons I had to reinstall the system. Even with a new installation and default configuration, this problem still happens, but only happens with specific actions. This is what I got up to now:
- Sometimes, when opening konsole or writing something in konsole (just writing). Randomly also happens when text is being displayed in konsole, as when compiling.
- When the screen fades out, like when KDE shows a window message.
- Sometimes, when I open glxgears to try if optimus works (it works).

Another hint: not the whole screen is frozen. There is a small row in the upper side (about 100 px) which refreshes properly. If I use the scroll in the desktop, like when changing from one desktop to another, the screen refreshes again.

EDIT: when it happens, /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything new.
EDIT 2: now the clock works properly.

Well, it happened again and I managed to record it on video so you can check what happens exactly. Maybe this could help anybody to understand the problem:

After doing some tests, finally I found the problem. It seems OpenGL doesn't work properly. If I change the engine in systemsettings from OpenGL to XRender, it works perfectly fine. I tried to change the OpenGL options, such as QT system, scaling method, activate/deactivate shaders and VSync, but it doesn't solve anything. Any ideas with this new hint?
