I'm looking at one as an upgrade/add-on to my current system and need input on the Linux support. Is it worth it or would I be better with one of the cheaper models?

Thanks for the links lxg:

From what I was able to read quickly, there's no effective analong support yet, which was the main reason I'd been looking at it. Guess it means I'll have to look at a different model.

Yes it works, driver is in the kernel, just add firmware.

According to the MythTV Wiki - The analog support is expiremental for the card (Alpha quality code)http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-HVR-2250

This means it's almost useless for my needs as I need analog support. There are other cards with better support listed on the MythTV site that are available so I do have options. Right now the HVR 1250 is listed as having full capture support. IR doesn't work yet but that's not a major issue to me. Main thing is the Ananlog support is complete and that's what I need.

I have a pair of HVR-1600s. Each has an analog tuner and a QAM/ATSC tuner. It's all supported under Linux, and it all works.

A year ago, in my area Comcast moved to digital-only. I bought an HD-HomeRun Prime, got a cable card from Comcast, and when it was convenient, removed my HVR-1600s. I might like to keep one, against unknown eventualities, but right now they're in a drawer, not gathering dust because the drawer generally stays closed. I'm in Vermont, in the eastern US. If you're interested, PM.

EDIT

I used these for several years with MythTV. I also spent a bit of time on the mailing list with the developer, doing what I could to help get support up to snuff.

Drivers do not get added to the kernel by an accident. They have to work reliably for that. Of course, we live in free world and everyone has the right to make their choices. I personally believed kernel maintainers versus some outdated wiki. As a result this card has been working fine for me for quite a time now. Analog and digital. MythTV analog support is another question, users are having trouble with all kind of analog devices.
