With mplayer I would like to play a 3D film in 2D. (How) can this be done?

I have asked Google. Found the same suggestion, but when I try it the following error displays:

Code:
% mplayer -vo gl:mirror=3 somefile.mkv

Could not parse arguments at the position indicated below:
mirror=3

So it looks like the gl video output device does not have the option mirror. I couldn't find this in the mplayer man page either. I'll search for the reason behind this but I was hoping for other solutions as well -- the gl output is quite CPU costly isn't it?

so?

I'm using libav, not ffmpeg, the devs of mplayer recommend using ffmpeg with mplayer and not libav. mplayer2 gives me all I need and if not, vlc solves it.
