PostPosted: Tue Jan 22, 2013 9:59 pm    Post subject: Mouse/keyboard off in X since udev-197 update Reply with quote

Hi,
Something has upset just one of my machines since the stabilization of udev-197-r3. While the machine was working fine prior to this update unfortunately there have been a number of file changes (the kernel to add devtmpfs, xorg.conf to try nouveau and then going back to nvidia) and stupidly I haven't saved everything so I'm approaching this as a new installation.

The symptom I'm dealing with is that the keyboard is working fine if I boot without X. (xdm disabled in rc-update) I can work at the console, do updates, etc. Everything works fine at the console. After that, if I start xdm from the command line, X comes up to the KDE login screen but now keyboard isn't functional. The mouse LED is on but the mouse doesn't function. If I ssh into the machine and shut off X then the keyboard once again works.

Best I can see the warning message in Xorg.0.log that's at issue here is this:

[ 20349.369] (WW) Hotplugging is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.
[ 20349.369] (WW) Disabling Mouse0
[ 20349.369] (WW) Disabling Keyboard0

I'll attached Xorg.0.log as well as xorg.conf to this thread.

Basic setup stuff from make.conf:

VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"

Note I also tried no xorg.conf wth both the nvidia & nouveau drivers but in neither case did X even start.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Clean up your conf, leave just this:
Quote:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

And try again.

Did you remember to recompile xf86-input-evdev and other drivers after udev upgrade like the postinst message of udev suggested?

Code:

# revdep-rebuild --library libudev.so.0

And previous comment about shorting the xorg.conf looks accurate too. It''s quite close what I'm using except I have twinview config on top of that.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the tips. No love yet. Same results even with the almost empty xorg.conf file. X comes up, the KDE login screen is there. The keyboard & mouse are dead.

The log file is certainly cleaner and the warning about turning the mouse & keyboard off is gone, but unfortunately the mouse & keyboard are still dead in X. If I stop X via an ssh session then keyboard starts working again.

As for the revdep-rebuild I hoped that might be it but it didn't offer any clues. Seems everything was OK.

Could this have something to do with old udev rules being around somewhere? There's nothing much in /etc/udev/rules.d. Maybe somewhere else?

New data below.

Thanks,
Mark

Here's the checklist:

Is x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev in your system?
With what USE flags xorg-server is compiled with?
Does your kernel support evdev?

Here's the answers:

I believe it does:

k2 ~ # zcat /proc/config.gz | grep EVDEV
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y
k2 ~ #

One other communication comes to mind. This machine recently went through a profile change. My wife uses XFCE. When I use the machine I use KDE. The machine was originally built with the plain profile but over time developed some Alsa problems - some applications didn't have sound and I couldn't figure out why so to make it like the other 5 machine I look after I switched it to the KDE profile. This happened maybe a week or two before the udev update came out. Something like 150 packages were rebuilt. Possibly something that should have been rebuilt wasn't and that might possibly be effecting this? Long shot but I figured better to put it all out there.

Thanks,
Mark

Maybe I'm blind but I haven't seen anyone post /proc/bus/input/devices output yet. Please do that. If you see your mouse there then `cat /dev/input/event<number>` and moving the mouse would cause garbage on the screen...

Code:

# cat /proc/bus/input/devices
# ls -l /dev/input/*

Then, does upgrading to latest xf86-input-evdev do any change? Using 2.6.0 or 2.7.3? Perhaps try to enable INPUT_DEVICES="evdev mouse keyboard". Then, dmesg output at the time of starting X.org, or boot? Perhaps even xf86-input-evdev driver from the x11 overlay so it's git version (assuming it's compatible with in-tree X.org server) if it really just seems to be about the driver.

Hi,
OK, right now my wife is using the keyboard on my Gentoo laptop so I'm just playing with the mouse part of it. What I see is the mouse is functioning whether X is started or not. However when X is started the pointer on the screen is not moving even though I'm getting USB events.

The stuff I'm pasting below shows 1) the machine with a clean boot and xdm never being started (it's off in rc-update), and then 2) xdm started. Both of these are from a ssh session:

I'll try adding the older keyboard and mouse drivers to see what that does. I'll also report back later when my wife goes to work and I get the keyboard back. :)

I have exactly the same behavior as Mark describes in the post above.
As a temporary solution I downgraded to udev-171 and everything works fine.

Keyboard now attached. Nothing different found so far.

Best I can tell, even if I switched to an overlay like x11, I think I'm already using the most up-to-date xf86-input-evdev driver that has a package number. I did an eix-remote update and then looked for newer versions but didn't find one other than the masked 9999. Not sure if that's the right way to go about it but I'm worried about updating all of X11. That said I'll consider it if I don't make headway.

This does seem to be completely about the driver but I'm at a loss. Xorg.0.log shows no evidence of doing anything with the mouse & keyboard drivers. As a comparison I'm posting part of another machine's log file showing how it looks on a working machine.

Just a couple more observations before I go bug-eyed:

On the machine that's working, and which does use an xorg.conf file, I'm getting the warning about disabling keyboard and mouse, just like the original Xorg.0.log on the machine that fails. Maybe I should go back to using an xorg.conf file as it appears this is truly just a warning:

Quote:

[ 18.161] (==) ModulePath set to "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
[ 18.161] (WW) Hotplugging is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.
[ 18.161] (WW) Disabling Keyboard0
[ 18.161] (WW) Disabling Mouse0

While the log files aren't, and cannot be, identical, they are quite similar down to the end of the non-working machine:

Quote:

[ 1510.768] (II) NVIDIA(0): [DRI2] VDPAU driver: nvidia

I have exactly the same behavior as Mark describes in the post above.
As a temporary solution I downgraded to udev-171 and everything works fine.

lakeroe - Could you please post whatever steps you believe you took to downgrade? What did you mask?

I might try this just to duplicate your results and then try to get an xorg.conf file back in place that's known to work, then go back to udev-197 and see if it fails again.

Seems like if we both have this problem a bug should be filed but I don't think I have the right files on this machine anymore to file a good bug.

Thanks in advance!

One other thing I'd like anyone to check is that these devtmpfs options are consistent with what you all are doing with this newer udev:

Quote:

c2stable ~ # zcat /proc/config.gz | grep DEVTMP
CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y
# CONFIG_DEVTMPFS_MOUNT is not set
c2stable ~ #

It's set this way on both working and failing machines here but I was unclear which the gentoo-devs really intended for the second one.

NOTE: All of my machines are using an initramfs built into the kernel so I don't think it's supposed to matter in my case...

Thanks,
Mark

Hello Mark,

as far as I remember I just added
>=virtual/udev-197 in package.mask
and did an
emerge -vutDN world.
Then I did
revdep-rebuild
rc-update add udev sysinit
rc-update add udev-mount sysinit
rc-update add udev-postmount default
and a reboot.

Once again, what does 'udevadm info' print for the event* device nodes with udev 197, cause it seems (going by your Xorg log), that for some reason keyboard/mouse aren't getting tagged.

Most of my questions are still unanswered too. A bit frustrating, but oh well.

Sorry. It was end of the day yesterday and I needed to figure out what you were asking me to do. Hopefully this is what you wanted to see. If you need more or I did this wrong please let me know what you want.

OK, the machine has booted, xdm has not yet started. Here's the udevadm info results:

Once again, what does 'udevadm info' print for the event* device nodes with udev 197, cause it seems (going by your Xorg log), that for some reason keyboard/mouse aren't getting tagged.

Most of my questions are still unanswered too. A bit frustrating, but oh well.

I'm very sorry but rereading above I thought I'd gotten you what asked for yesterday but it looks like I missed the dmesg part. Other than that everything below is what I said yesterday and did for a second time today. I'll add the dmesg stuff at the very end.

1) the two CLI questions were answered yesterday and and again this morning in the post just before this one.

2) I am upgraded to the latest xf86-input-evdev-2.7.3 already.

3) I tried adding INPUT_DEVICES="evdev mouse keyboard" to /etc/portage/make.conf. It emerged the two drivers but I saw no changes. For now I've left them in.

4) I added the x11 overlay but it didn't want to emerge anything new. Everything higher is masked.

OK, dmesg output before starting xdm:

So there is no additional output in dmesg after starting X. xdm is up, graphics are on the screen. Mouse & keyboard don't work.

Again, if there's some question you've asked that I've missed please let me know and I'll get the data.

Thanks!

Hello Mark,

as far as I remember I just added
>=virtual/udev-197 in package.mask
and did an
emerge -vutDN world.
Then I did
revdep-rebuild
rc-update add udev sysinit
rc-update add udev-mount sysinit
rc-update add udev-postmount default
and a reboot.

Thanks. I'll keep this in mind if I don't get udev-197 working today. I appreciate the info.

OK - more disappointing info. This machine's software is getting sicker. This morning I sync'ed and did a standard emerge -DuN @world. portage wanted to rebuild gcc-4.6.3 and the build fails. I tried emerging gcc by itself and it fails the same way. Unfortunately the machine has already moved to the 4.6.3 profile so I don't think I can go back, at least not easily.

I dunno what's wrong here but this one machine is certainly unhappy...

:(

Someone in #gentoo at Freenode had USE="openrc" disabled for sys-fs/udev that prevented the keyboard from working in X

I'm just saying it's worth to check

# emerge -pv udev
# USE="openrc" emerge -pv udev

Okay, I just found the bug:

You just have to manually emerge sys-fs/udev-init-scripts, that's the trick.
This is done automatically if openrc is in the USE flags.

But I have still one more problem:
I don't get a /dev/rtc entry, just /dev/rtc0 so the nvram-wakeup tool is not working.
Any ideas ?

Regards,
lakeroe

USE="openrc" is enabled by default from the IUSE in the ebuild so user must explicitely pass USE="-openrc" in make.conf or package.use to end up with such broken setup.

It's not a bug that USE="-openrc" leaves OpenRC specific init scripts out. It's to be expected setting USE="-openrc" breaks OpenRC systems ;-)

Okay, it's not a bug, but it would be good to get a message to manually install the init-scripts.
Do you have any idea to get the /dev/rtc entry ?
