i have resolved this problem in a round about way.... booting xdm loading /usr/bin/gdm will get the menu to function again. i was dumped to a terminal login and startx to load gnome 2.... that is not fixed, but i will post my solution to the systemd wiki....
yay gentoo gnome2 in all its systemd glory wiki repair found.... i give express permission for my g letter in that storm of xdm text to be copied to the gentoo.org wiki
