I am trying to get a microphone working on my system, but, irrespective of what capture device I choose, I cannot unmute it. I can click the unmute button and close the volume control window, but whenever I go back, it is muted again. All of the capture devices behave like this.

I have pulseaudio on my system (with Gnome 2.32). I don't really know what info would be relevant, so please tell me what information to post.

Have you tried using alsamixer in a terminal? Have you added alsasound to the default runlevel?

I did not have alsasound in the default runlevel, but starting it made no difference.

I did run alsamixer and the capture volume looks OK.

However, I just tried to run "Sound Recorder" from the Applications -> Sound & Video menu and I get the following message:
Code:
Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them with the "Sound Preferences" under the System Preferences menu.

but I don't have a "Sound Preferences" item anywhere in the menus.

Can you unmute it with pavucontrol?
$ pavucontrol
You may need to set it up for input on the Configuration tab and then unmute it on the input tab.
Is media-sound/pavucontrol installed?

I installed pavucontrol and was able to see that it was working. The volume control app still shows the mic as muted, but things work.
