Hi, I'm new to all this, so please be patient.
My webcam is plugged in (USB) and is recognised, but won't work. Help?

nomeenichols,

Welcome to Gentoo. A new thread for a new problem.

Your camera is a 0c45:6310, thats the vendor and device ID.

Google thinks that is a uvc device, so your need USB support and uvc support in your kernel.
In August 2011, there were known issues with your camera.

Build UVC support as a module <M> in your kernel. Exactly how you do that depends on how your made your kernel in the first place.
With genkernel, or manually?

Thank you. I thought I may need to do something like that. My dad built the kernel, a long time ago. Manually I think. But he is busy, so is not able to help. :/

nomeenichols,

Please use wgetpaste to put your kernel .config file onto a pastebin site.
If you don't have wgetpaste, you will need to emerge it.

Code:
wgetpaste --help
will teach you to use it.

The kernel .config file should be at /usr/src/linux/.config
Tell us the URL you get back from wgetpaste.

If you are lucky, its a question of adding things as loadable modules to your existing kernel, which is much easier than building and installing a new kernel.
