I want to install a TP-LINK TL-WN821N version 2 USB WLAN dongle in my x86_64 3.6.11-gentoo Kernel.

I used to successfully installed that dongle in another Gentoo laptop. I think the only difference is just that system is 32-bit based.

Now I want to move it from my Gentoo laptop to this Gentoo server, but I failed. The main error message is:

"[ 3.164325] usb 1-1.6: firmware not found."

But I really ever emerged linux-firmware and the lib folder is:
#ls /lib/firmware
ar9170-1.fw
ar9170-2.fw

And other key message as below:

#dmesg

As always: Either compile the driver as a module (you currently have it built-in), or also compile the firmware into the kernel.

Also, you don't have the correct firmware. Get the correct one here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170#Firmware-1

Thanks!

Now I downloaded the new firmware as your introduction and I successfully let the system recognize the WLAN USB dongle. And I successfully make it up.

I don't know how to make the firmware complied into the kernel, I just put it in the /lib64/firmware and then almost everything goes well.

But now I still have a trouble disturbing me. That is now the WLAN USB dongle cannot be up during the booting. Indeed, before I was using a Linksys USB dongle as the uplink of my server. The Linksys USB dongle also cannot be up during the booting procedure. That's why I change it to the TP-link USB dongle. I want to check if it is the hardware issue. And now I can prove it is not due to the hardware issue. I can use rc -s net.wlan1 start to make the USB dongle up whatever it is TP-link or Linksys one.

It seems this issue came out after I try to install Postfix and Dovecot. Before I have nginx+php+mysql and at that time, everything is OK.

I don't know why now the USB dongle cannot be loaded automatically during the booting time.

Did you compile the driver as a module? Though there's one thing: I have a different TP-LINK dongle, using a different driver, and mine too fails to load properly if it's present at boot. I thought it's just something weird with my machine, but now it seems it's a common problem.

Do this: Install wgetpaste. Reboot the machine with the dongle plugged in. After the machine boots, run
Code:
dmesg | wgetpaste

and post the link here.
