started my semi-annual emerge world process
(it's way too painful to do more frequently)

[blocks B ] sys-fs/udev ("sys-fs/udev" is blocking sys-fs/eudev-0)
[blocks B ] app-misc/realpath ("app-misc/realpath" is blocking sys-apps/coreutils-8.20)
[blocks B ] <sys-fs/udev-171-r9999[extras] ("<sys-fs/udev-171-r9999[extras]" is blocking sys-auth/consolekit-0.4.5_p20120320-r1)
[blocks B ] <x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.4 ("<x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.4" is blocking x11-libs/gtk+-3.4.4)

but if i try to update udev, xorg server blocks IT.
do i have to unmerge all of X to get around this? seems insane. 8O

no!
Code:
[blocks B ] app-misc/realpath ("app-misc/realpath" is blocking sys-apps/coreutils-8.20)

you need unmerge app-misc/realpath (in sys-apps/coreutils now)
Code:
[blocks B ] sys-fs/udev ("sys-fs/udev" is blocking sys-fs/eudev-0)

choose one of.
Code:
equery d udev eudev

Code:
[blocks B ] <sys-fs/udev-171-r9999[extras] ("<sys-fs/udev-171-r9999[extras]" is blocking sys-auth/consolekit-0.4.5_p20120320-r1)

you need update {e}udev (previous step)
...
and last step:
Code:
[blocks B ] <x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.4 ("<x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.4" is blocking x11-libs/gtk+-3.4.4)
just update X

You would see less of this if you update more often, say about once a month. Use emerge -1 virtual/udev to help solve the confusion with udev. With forks comes virtuals and blockers.

Seeing someone with a join date of 2002 querying help for a simple blocker is something i consider more insane.

thanks all.
it's not a simple blocker, this is after resolving 4 or 5 other blocks before this one.
not to mention i had to "know" to remove realpath since it's been moved. and then update udev using its virtual (which i don't think it had before?).
this got me one step further...

after this gtk+ is blocking xorg-server.
thanks for your help @The Doctor and @megabaks

so now
Code:
[blocks B      ] <x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.4 ("<x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.4" is blocking x11-libs/gtk+-3.4.4)

so i keyword ~amd64 unmasked gtk+3.6.2 and i get:
Code:
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=x11-libs/gtk+-3.6.2" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/gtk+-3.6.2::gentoo (masked by: invalid: DEPEND: USE flag 'prefix' referenced in conditional '!prefix?' is not in IUSE)

which google says is a bug in the profiles?
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351274

i guess i'll just mask gtk+-3.4.4 :x

USE="extras" is at least not supported anymore. Don't use it for sys-fs/udev.

thanks @ssuominen. that seems to be what this all stemmed from. for some reason emerge wasn't rebuilding udev even though i removed the extras use flag. this was messing with consolekit and it was all borked from there.

The blocker is there because USE="extras" for 171 enables building the udev-acl binary that is now moved to consolekit as it was dropped from udev and consolekit was the only package needing it. Done at upstream level too:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/ConsoleKit/

Somekind of 'ell must freeze over before I let ConsoleKit die and switch to systemd-login! ;-)

I'm glad you got it solved. Please change $topic to say [SOLVED].

aha! :D

yeah, just making sure... i'm still getting some spurious blocks...
yeah, this sonofa keeps blocking me...
no idea why/how/where but udev keeps grabbing some extras use flag. it's not in make.conf, it's not in packages.use
i had to add -extras to >=sys-fs/udev-171 in packages.use

Duplicate make.conf in /etc and in /etc/portage? The new location is in /etc/portage and you can move it over.

grep -r the /etc for extras? but I guess you already did

yeah, only one is in package.use.dist?

dunno what that file does. google isn't much help...

i'd guess dispatch-conf put it there, but it has its own rcs area.
but probably something similar, and i'd hope portage wasn't taking values from it...
