anyone noticed how lately distros are offering certain versions as 'rolling release'? Now all of a sudden 'rolling release' is something must-have that solves several problems.
It struck me as funny that this is mentioned as if it was a great discovery and somehow improves their distro marketing image.
If I am not mistaken Gentoo has been 'rolling release' since the get go. |

Gentoo Portage tree has been rolling release since day one. Gentoo has always had releases of binary products, such as the old "Gentoo Reference Platform" and now the live DVDs. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

"Rolling release" is actually what I prefer about Gentoo. It's much more like the traditional Unix culture of sending out source-code and patches, and sharing fixes which you can apply straight-away.
I don't buy the whole "frozen is more stable" approach of binary distribution. AFAIC frozen means 'brittle' and easy-to-break.
Far better to distribute sources that can be compiled and tweaked for the local machine. It means things are much more transparent, and can be fixed when they break (and things always do.) I hated having to wait for binary updates, and not knowing which ones would clash with others. Gentoo saves me an awful lot of time. |
