Hello,
I'm working on updating media-video/vlc from 2.0.3 to 2.0.5 on an amd64 system.
It looks like compiling failed after this:
Code:
checking for NCURSES... no
configure: error: No package 'ncursesw' found.

Is this an unmet dependency or something that I need to resolve myself or is there a bug I might be running into?

emerge --info:
Code:

You could manually emerge sys-libs/ncurses, but use flag dependencies should pull that in if needed. What does emerge -pv vlc say?

I checked my own system and equery depends ncurses gives me media-video/vlc-2.0.5 (ncurses ? >=sys-libs/ncurses-5.9-r2[unicode]) - but there's no unicode use flag for vlc.

Anyway, I'll compare your emerge -pv vlc to mine and see if I spot anything...

I already have ncurses installed, but I suppose I could be missing a use flag. I would thing the dependency checks would catch that.

emerge -pv vlc:
Code:
[ebuild     U  ] media-video/vlc-2.0.5 [2.0.3] USE="X a52 aac alsa avcodec avformat dbus dvbpsi dvd encode ffmpeg gcrypt mmx mp3 mpeg ncurses opengl png postproc projectm qt4 sse swscale udev x264 xcb -aalib (-altivec) -atmo (-audioqueue) -avahi -bidi -bluray -cdda -cddb -dc1394 -debug -dirac (-direct2d) -directfb (-directx) (-dshow) -dts -dvb (-dxva2) -egl -fbosd -flac -fluidsynth -fontconfig -gme -gnome -gnutls -growl -httpd -ieee1394 (-ios-vout) -jack -kate -kde -libass -libcaca -libnotify -libproxy -libsamplerate -libtar -libtiger -linsys -lirc -live -lua (-macosx) (-macosx-audio) (-macosx-dialog-provider) (-macosx-eyetv) (-macosx-qtkit) (-macosx-quartztext) (-macosx-vout) -matroska (-media-library) -modplug -mtp -musepack (-neon) -ogg -omxil -optimisememory -opus% -oss -portaudio -pulseaudio -pvr -rtsp -run-as-root -samba -schroedinger -sdl -sdl-image -shine -shout -sid -skins -speex -sqlite -svg -switcher -taglib -theora -truetype -twolame -upnp -v4l -vaapi -vcdx -vlm -vorbis (-waveout) (-win32codecs) (-wingdi) -wma-fixed -xml -xosd -xv -zvbi" 0 kB

equery uses ncruses:
Code:
[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]
[        : I - package is installed with flag     ]
[ Colors : set, unset                             ]
 * Found these USE flags for sys-libs/ncurses-5.9-r2:
 U I
 - - ada         : Add bindings for the ADA programming language
+ + cxx         : Builds support for C++ (bindings, extra libraries, code generation, ...)
 - - debug       : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml
 - - doc         : Adds extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc). It is recommended to enable per package instead of globally
 + + gpm         : Adds support for sys-libs/gpm (Console-based mouse driver)
 - - minimal     : Install a very minimal build (disables, for example, plugins, fonts, most drivers, non-critical features)
 - - profile     : Adds support for software performance analysis (will likely vary from ebuild to ebuild)
 - - static-libs : Build static libraries
 - - trace       : Enable test trace() support in ncurses calls
+ + unicode     : Adds support for Unicode

Do you need the ncurses use flag?

Not really, I don't really use vlc from a terminal often.
It will compile without the ncurses flag set.
I was mostly just posting because this seems like a possible bug and I wanted to make sure it wasn't something wrong on my end before I filed a report.

Code:
$pkg-config --cflags ncursesw
Package ncursesw was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `ncursesw.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'ncursesw' found

Code:
qlist ncurses | grep "\.pc"
or
Code:
equery -C f ncurses | grep "\.pc"

That doesn't return any results.
Is there a particular file I should be looking for?

Yup, that seems to have done it.
I also had to re-set the gcc profile, but that's because I updated gcc.

Thanks for the help guys!

It would be nice if a moderator could clean up the 8 or so mixed threads about this issue. :? This in particular seems to affect anything expecting /usr/lib/pkgconfig/ncurse*.pc related files for configure and vlc 2.0.5.

See bug regarding the missing ncurses*.pc related files within the /usr/lib/pkgconfig path.

If you have an older system where ncurses has been updated you'll probably have those files. For others working off a newer stage3 install where ncurses has not been re-emerged yet, those files seem to be missing. Just --oneshot re-emerge ncurses to resolve.

I used whatever stage3 was current back in August or September of 2012, so that's probably what I was running into.
That bug is lists vlc 2.0.4 in particular, but it appears to affect 2.0.5 as well. I don't think it would affect 2.0.3; I had that version installed with the ncurses USE flag without realizing my ncurses needed to be rebuilt.
