Try as I might, I just can't figure it out. All the details I can think of are posted, just ask if you need anything else.

I expect it's just a coincidence but I too could not
build pykde4 this morning.

In my case it was the confusion (which has been noted
before but apparently not quite fixed) between
python-2.7 and python-3.2

I had to unmerge python-3.2 for pykde4 to build.

I had a couple of problems with PyQt4 and another Python library - the cure was to run
python-updater. Even though the problems were apparently unconnected, they both
went away. There's also an environment variable PYTHON_TARGETS which doesn't
seem to be set by default; you might try setting it in /etc/env.d to "2.7 3.2" which I
_think_ is the current default format (I don't have the current Gentoo running ATM).

Ok, I am currently trying python updater. It spit out some warning/error about autounmask-keepmask...or something like that. I am going to investigate and report back soon.

Again, I don't know this is really relevant, but
thanks to the tip from CWR, I set my python
target to 2.7 only and pykde4 then compiled
even though python 3.2 was installed

(note: I don't particularly want 3.2 but a bunch
of packages I have seem to call for it ...)

Well I got a bit further along but still failing on PyKDE4.

Can you explain how to set Python 2.7 only? I used eselect yesterday to set
eselect python set --python2 python2.7
eselect python set --python3 python3.2
I'm guessing that is not how you did it.

I put in /etc/make.conf

Code:
PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7"
PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7"
USE_PYTHON="2.7"

(the "USE_PYTHON" is deprecated but some programs
might still read it ... I don't know what the SINGLE

It seems to be working fine now. Thanks a lot. It was a real head stumper for me. I'm gonna let this world update run all night and will report back if any further troubles arise. Once again, thanks.

Python-updater crapped out on me. I read somewhere to try recompiling setuptools and argparser. Something worked after that, python-updater finished, Pykde4 compiled. It's all good now. Oh and one other thing. I had to add 2.6 to USE_PYTHON= for argparser to compile but it went well after that. Fixing to try a @world update now. (Fingers crossed) Thanks everyone.

Here is my make.conf

PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_6 python2_7"
PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7"
USE_PYTHON='2.7 2.6'

I find the various incantations of Python pretty confusing. There's an explanation at:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/Python/python-r1/user-guide.xml
but deciding the right configuration with multiple Python versions is still tricky. Up to
now I've always stuck to a single 2.x interpreter for that reason.

I _think_ PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET overrides everything else, so in fact you are
just using 2.7, but I may well be wrong. I have 2.x and 3.x installed, with python-eselect
setting 2.x as the system Python, and nothing has broken in the last 24 hours ...
