Yes, that's just what my phone needs: for the OS to be an ARM build of the most bloated Linux distro. My compact car also needs a Chinese tractor motor because if I remove all the seats, electrics and trim it will fit. |

The BBC link is no better really, it's the Ubuntu site paraphrased with soundbites from Mr Ubuntu. Then someone speaks sense right at the end, but by then I would imagine less patient readers than me would have moved on to another page.
After using mini headlines including POWERFUL APPS and ADVANCED VOICE CONTROL there is a small paragraph at the bottom which speaks sense:
Quote: | One analyst suggested the news would raise awareness of the Ubuntu system, but was sceptical about its chances of success.
"It's an impressive move by Ubuntu but ultimately I don't think it's a smart move," said Chris Green, principal technology analyst at Davies Murphy Group Europe.
"They are not the first company to try and drop a desktop operating system on a mobile device and nobody has ever been able to make it work. Microsoft tried to foist something that looked and felt like normal Windows on a mobile phone and they had to screw it up and develop a separate phone system.
"If you look at the platforms that thrive at the moment it's the ones that have diverged and had a platform designed for mobile on their mobile devices and a platform designed for conventional PCs on those." |

I posted it here because I felt the same. There's not a lot of information.
I figured, some of you have developer or at-least flamming experience on the issue at hand, so this could produce the information we are seeking. _________________ "Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated, until defeat has been accepted as a reality." -- Bruce Lee |

It has a usable toolchain? It's a full Linux distribution. Plug it into a monitor, keyboard, and mouse it becomes a full Ubuntu desktop machine. _________________

From what little I follow Ubuntu, it seems like the founder wants to control Linux. Seems like a Bad Thing(TM). _________________ I can saw a woman in two, but you won't want to look in the box when I'm through.

So long as they keep releasing their modifications and "progress" back into the FOSS community I don't see how he can hurt anything, and in fact I believe it is a "Good Thing" even though I don't use any of their stuff, nor do I plan to. _________________

The thing that bothers me the most is, whether we're going to see any of the phones in the market.
This all seems like a POC for the sake of it. _________________ "Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated, until defeat has been accepted as a reality." -- Bruce Lee |

In other news, Samsung will build a Tizen device, and there was also some talk of actual FirefoxOS phones. Should be interesting. How's the Gentoo phone coming along btw? |

Also you need to assemble it yourself and on occasion all the parts will decide they magically don't fit together anymore. _________________ we are microsoft, lower your firewalls and surrender your pc's. we will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. your culture will adapt and service us. resistance is futile. |
