I've been having this problem: gnome-shell works perfectly for root, but shows "Aw, something wrong has happened" and logs out for other users. This is my system info:
Code:

I've just installed gnome-3.6.2 and after uninstalling gnome-shell, fallback mode starts cleanly for my normal user.

smlbstcbr,

Is your normal user in the video group?

gnome-shell needs hardware 3D acceleration but normal users need to be in the video group to use that.

Certainly:

Code:

samuel@localhost ~ $ groups
root bin sys wheel floppy cdrom video games cdrw usb 1000 messagebus haldaemon plugdev gdm vmware wireshark

It is a very odd behavior and looking for it in Internet shows a lot of different causes but almost none gives a clear answer.

I had this happen to me a few years ago. I had to remove my .config and .gnome2 folder from my /home
I suggest backing up your existing .config folder first to somewhere safe, then try logging in.
If that does not resolve the issue, then put it back into /home and try some other solution.

I've already tried that. In fact, I unmerged gnome, deleted all the related directories in my home folder and re-merged gnome, but nothing. I had to unmerge gnome-shell to use my normal session.
