On my machine, samba and login use the exactly same set of usernames and passwords.
But I must maintain a separate /etc/samba/smbpasswd or /var/lib/sam/passdb.tdb for samba.
It is a totally redundancy!
I learnt the samba howto, but there's no cfg to let samba use passwd&shadow directly.
why samba don't do this?
so I think everytime I add/modify/delete a user, i must remember to run smbpasswd command.
It is not a big burden but it's annoying. |

Both samba and linux use hashed (encrypted) databases. However the hashing suites are incompatible with one another. Samba has to hash its database in a way so it can authenticate Windows machines; Linux uses a different hashing algorithm. |
